Job Description

As part of expanding the Centre for Visual Data Science and the Centre for Digital Humanities, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, invites applications for a 3-year assistant professor position in Computer Science with a focus on interdisciplinary data science.

The ideal candidate holds a degree in computer science, data science, applied mathematics, or a closely related field, and demonstrates a strong track record of research and development in interdisciplinary projects. We particularly welcome applicants with experience collaborating across domains such as the humanities, social sciences, biology, health, or defense. Demonstrated ability to successfully conduct research in interdisciplinary collaborations with domain experts is a fundamental requirement for employment at the Centre for Visual Data Science and the Centre for Digital Humanities.

A key qualification for this position is demonstrated experience in the design, development, and maintenance of robust and scalable solutions for large, collaborative research projects. This includes the ability to integrate heterogeneous data sources, support reproducible workflows, and enable advanced analytics across disciplines. Experience in developing and deploying machine learning solutions is considered an advantage. Experience applying such solutions within digital humanities contexts is highly desirable.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate

• is a computer scientist, data scientist or an applied mathematician holding a PhD

• has a strong record of research at a high international level, reflecting the academic age of the applicant

• can teach and advise in data science and computer science at all levels.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a requirement: more English than Danish is used when teaching in computer science, and more than half of the faculty members in computer science have international backgrounds. Our new colleague will be offered Danish courses by the university.

Applications from promising early-career talents are highly encouraged. The appointment is temporary for a 3-year period. Employment as an assistant professor requires academic qualifications at a minimum of PhD level at the time of employment, with a preference for candidates with postdoc experience. During employment, the assistant professor will complete the Lecturer Training Programme. A successful candidate may be hired at our campuses in Odense, Kolding or Vejle, depending on the candidate’s profile.
