Position Description
Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific announces a full-time tenure-track appointment for Assistant Professor of Piano. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative teacher/performer whose background, professional performing accomplishments, and pedagogy will attract and retain students to the wide variety of program offerings at Pacific’s Conservatory. The expectation is to develop and then sustain a studio of 16 – 18 music major pianists at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. Excellent applied lesson teaching is the primary responsibility, and additional teaching duties could include courses such as pedagogy, chamber music, and/or a related area of expertise. The incumbent will be expected to build a career of first regional and, over time, national, distinction as a musician, pianist, and pedagogue, one perceived as a clear advocate for and mentor to undergraduate, HS and MS pianists, and their teachers. In collaboration with Pacific’s ensemble and applied faculty, the selected candidate’s career arc and skills must be sufficient to recruit, retain, and sustain a collegiate/pre-professional-level studio of pianist music majors. Key is the candidate’s ability to recruit, retain, and develop piano students who enter Pacific at collegiate and/or pre-professional levels. Participation in school-wide committees and departmental hearings, auditions, recruitment, master classes, and other activities is expected. The incumbent will supervise collaborative pianists and class piano faculty.
