Job Description

The Division of Pediatric Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is seeking a full-time, board-eligible or board-certified Pediatric Surgeon to join a dynamic and growing practice. This position is available at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

We are specifically seeking a dedicated physician-scientist and practicing surgeon to contribute to a well-established program with a commitment to excellence in scientific patient care, academic productivity, and innovative education. The successful candidate will be passionate about programmatic development, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing the division’s clinical and academic missions.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence & Collaboration

  • Clinical Practice: Actively participate in a robust clinical practice performing approximately 1,000 cases annually with consistent year-over-year growth.
  • Team-Based Care: Collaborate effectively within a dedicated team of five Pediatric Surgeons and five Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
  • Interdisciplinary Care: Demonstrate a steadfast commitment to intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient care and advance programmatic goals.
  • Health Equity: Actively participate in multidisciplinary efforts to streamline patient care with a specific focus on enhancing equity and justice.

Research, Discovery & Innovation

  • Research Program: Develop and maintain an independent or collaborative research program relevant to pediatric surgery, aimed at advancing scientific knowledge and improving patient outcomes.
  • Basic Science Leadership: Play a key leadership role in advancing the basic science and discovery components of the Division.
  • Academic Contributions: Contribute to the academic mission through clinical outcomes research, quality and safety initiatives, trauma research, and the exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in pediatric surgery.
  • Funding & Publication: Aggressively pursue extramural funding opportunities; publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.

Education & Mentorship

  • Resident & Student Training: Engage in the mentorship and education of medical students and surgical residents from the University of Rochester Medical Center and Bassett Hospital.
  • Educational Platform: Contribute to the Division’s innovative educational platform, exhibiting intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for modernizing surgical education.

Professionalism & Communication

  • Communication: Maintain excellent communication skills with patients, families, colleagues, and trainees.
  • Engagement: Contribute to ongoing projects within the Division and exhibit an enthusiastic approach to innovative patient care.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery:

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center is a well- established and respected program with a strong commitment to patient care and academic advancement. The division achieved Level I Trauma Certification in 2022 and has demonstrated sustained excellence in patient care as measured by external benchmarks such as NSQIP-P. The division is actively engaged in robust academic productivity across various fields, and its trainees have presented at national forums. There is a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, patient safety, and addressing healthcare equity and justice. The division has also pioneered an innovative platform for pediatric surgical education.

There is active engagement in multidisciplinary efforts to improve and streamline patient care, with specific line of sight on improving equity and justice. We have a nascent patient reported outcomes ongoing project. We have pioneered an innovative platform for pediatric surgical education for our trainees.

Surgical procedures are performed in two sites: Golisano Children’s Hospital and Sawgrass

Outpatient Center. These sites are about 3 miles away from each other. Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery is comprised of 11 clinical divisions, 1 research division. In addition to several basic science and translational labs, UR Surgery Transforming-Culture with Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in Surgery Program harnesses education and research and our ties with the community to advance equity and justice in the medical area. Surgical Health Outcomes- research Reaching for Equity (SHORE) is a center designed to develop new and enhance existing research efforts through one integrated, multi-disciplinary program. This Enterprise will identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high quality care, while reducing medical errors, controlling costs, and improving patient safety.

URMC is also designated a Level I Adult Trauma Program, has a designation by the National Cancer Institute

Golisano Children’s Hospital

Golisano Children’s Hospital is a 148-bed, 245,000 sq ft structure adjacent to Strong Memorial Hospital. GCH has 68 NICU beds, 28 ICU beds, and 52 general care beds. GCH provides care for more than 74,000 patients and their families each year.

The Children’s Hospital includes private rooms for children and their families, a hospitality suite, resource library and state-of-the art OR rooms.

Our pediatric surgical specialists work exclusively with infants, children and adolescents and perform over 20,000 operations annually. They offer the most advanced surgical care in the region while providing a compassionate, patient and family-centered approach.

Rochester, NY

The University of Rochester is in Rochester, New York and is surrounded by world class culture, affordable housing, and nationally ranked public schools. The City of Rochester is a mecca for the arts: home to a philharmonic orchestra, wonderful museums including the Strong National Museum of Play, internationally recognized dance companies as well as The Eastman School of Music. The Rochester International Jazz Festival is one of the top 10 Jazz festivals in the nation. The region boasts access to great watersports both on Lake Ontario as well as the Finger Lakes. The Finger Lakes region is also home to many internationally known wineries.

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Pediatric Surgery Fellowship.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Surgery.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted New York State medical license.
  • A proven track record or clear potential for success in basic science or clinical research, including a strong publication history.
  • Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong interest in and aptitude for intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for innovative education of trainees and students
  • An interest in advancing the minimally invasive clinical program including robotic surgery.

The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process
