Benefits Eligible Overview The Department of Humanities draws on the expertise and commitment of it research-active faculty to provide excellent undergraduate educational experiences to majors, minors and the broader university.

The unifying theme of the department is the study of societies, past and present, framed within the tradition of the liberal arts. Within Sociology, faculty have research and teaching foci on social inequality (especially race and gender), criminology, family, and social psychology. Our curriculum emphasizes disciplinary knowledge (including methods and substantive content) as well as skills including critical thinking, critical and active reading, research, analysis, synthesis, written and oral communication, and ethical judgment. Majors and minors develop a firm foundation in sociology, and all majors engage in independent research projects in required research methods and capstone courses. We have two options within the sociology major-general sociology and criminology. The department balances its teaching and research programs, and wherever possible, integrates the two. Duties and Responsibilities The Department Humanities and VU invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sociology to begin start in August 2014.

We seek a new PhD or an early-career academic who:

  1. Has substantive interests in Criminology and/or Criminal Justice
  2. Has a well articulated research agenda that includes a commitment to scholarly productivity
  3. Has a commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
  4. We are particularly interested in candidates whose specializations are in the area of policing. Candidates from a criminology or closely related program should be comfortable working in a sociology program.

This is an academic year appointment, tenure track position with a normal teaching load of 2 courses per semester. We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or closely related program by start date.
  2. Evidence of an intent and ability to pursue an active research agenda.
  3. Evidence of an intent and ability to pursue an active teaching agenda in criminology and/or criminal justice.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Prior independent teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  2. Prior teaching experience or interest in teaching courses on policing.
  3. Ability to establish interdisciplinary research partnerships.

The Successful Candidate Will:

  1. Demonstrate or show the potential for excellence in undergraduate instruction and mentoring.
  2. Demonstrate or show the potential to conduct high quality research, as exhibited by publications in quality peer reviewed publications and/or awarded grants.
  3. Demonstrate or show the potential to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other constituents across the university and the community.
  4. Have an appreciation of diverse constituencies and add intellectual diversity to the department.
