Job Summary:

The Department of Social Sciences at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Early World History and Coordinator of the History Education Program.

Description of Job Duties:

The successful candidate will serve as both an Early World History professor and the Program Coordinator for the nationally accredited History Education program, which includes supervising the student teaching field experiences, teaching the required Methods course for Social Studies secondary education, and maintaining documentation and data for the purposes of preserving the program’s accreditation. The candidate will also advise History Education majors, ensuring that teacher candidates have fulfilled the minimum hours required for field experiences. Finally, the successful candidate will teach General Education courses both online and in-person in subjects such as Early World History and World Cultural Geography, in addition to upper-division courses in their area of expertise.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Completing systematic program reviews to ensure content alignment with the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and national or state approved standards.
  2. Evaluate assessments to ensure content aligns with teacher competencies and state and national standards, review and adjust processes for assessment redevelopment, and track passing rates on subject-area tests to analyze and target potential obstacles to teacher certification.
  3. Serve on the Teacher Education Council (TEC) and coordinate History Education program accreditation processes, which includes attending TEC meetings.
  4. Attending NCSS annual training sessions and overseeing the implementation of any SPA standard changes to the History Education program.
  5. Maintaining weekly office hours appropriate to course load
  6. Participating in early grade alert systems and assessing student outcomes
  7. Advising students and supporting student activities
  8. Continuing professional development

Work Setting & Expectations

  • Reports to the Chair of the Social Sciences Department.
  • Completion of safety and job-related training as required.
  • Salary determined according to SWOSU’s wage structure.
  • Responsible for following safety procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Full-time, 9-month, exempt position.
  • Employment at will.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience

  1. Ph.D. in History preferred.
  2. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  3. Familiarity with InTASC Core Teaching Standards, CAEP accreditation standards, and C3 Framework is preferred.
  4. Prior teaching experience at the secondary and collegiate level is preferred.
  5. Technological competence and experience in the LMS Canvas is preferred. Expectations are to maintain a Canvas site for each course and gain a working knowledge of the Colleague system.
  6. Candidates must include a statement on teaching philosophy.
