Job Description

The Department of Bioethics at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level The Department has a longstanding history of outstanding scholarship, education, and service. Its nationally- and internationally-recognized faculty have expertise in Bioethics, Medical Humanities, and Social Medicine. The Department has thriving Bioethics and Medical Humanities undergraduate minor, MA, and PhD programs, as well as an outstanding record of university, national, and international service.

Applicants must have a terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarly activity in Bioethics, Medical Humanities, Social Medicine, or related areas and the potential to advance his/her own line of independent research. We welcome applicants with wide-ranging areas of specialization within Bioethics and Medical Humanities. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship areas include neuroethics and human research ethics. The successful candidate will also have the interest and demonstrated ability to develop and submit proposals to NIH, NSF, or other suitable funding sources. While current external funding is not required, candidates who bring active funding will be given strong consideration.

Candidates must be eager to collaborate with the Department’s multi-disciplinary faculty, and to contribute to the Department’s teaching programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate will ideally begin work January 1 or July 1 of 2027 (start date negotiable).

CWRU is located in the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is a vibrant, culturally rich, re-emerging city that was recently named one of the top 15 best places to live in the US (www.timeout.com). University Circle is home to world-renowned cultural institutions, such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, and the stunning Cleveland Cultural Gardens, which celebrate the ethnic richness of the city’s history. University Circle is also the home of two world-class health care institutions, the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the nation’s third largest VA, The Louis B. Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $101,000-$110,000. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
