The Art History Department at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2027. We seek candidates with expertise in Art of the Americas before 1900; the field is open to candidates with expertise in the visual culture, material culture and/or built environment of the Americas, broadly defined as the Caribbean, North, Central and/or South America. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching intersect with race and indigeneity, and can contribute to our college's interdisciplinary programs in Latin America and Latine Studies and/or American Indian and Indigenous Studies. The position requires institutional service including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year. We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate their experience in teaching or working with broadly diverse student populations while contributing to a vibrant learning community that values academic freedom, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. The Art History Department remains firmly committed to our goal of equipping students with a critical understanding of the historical and theoretical concerns that have shaped the production, circulation, and reception of art, visual culture, and architecture over time and around the world. This position will provide students with necessary opportunities to think critically about the structural and institutional hierarchies that have shaped the art historical discipline. A specialist in the Arts of the Americas will also sustain the department’s emphasis on object-based learning as a critical approach of the discipline and be able to take advantage of the strengths of on-campus collections at Burke Library, the College Archives, and the Wellin Museum of Art.
Candidates with ABD will be considered, although candidates with a Ph.D. are preferred. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the first year and five courses thereafter. The expected 9-month base salary range for this position is $94,500 to $100,400.
