POSITION SPECIFICS

Assistant Professor (Non-Tenure Track) - Neurosurgery

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, in Hershey, PA, invites applications for a non-tenure line faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent, externally funded research program focused on translational research in neurodegenerative disorders. The candidate will contribute to collaborative research efforts within the Department of Neurosurgery, mentor trainees and junior researchers, and pursue extramural funding, including submission of NIH grant proposals within six months of appointment.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biochemistry or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Specialized expertise in iron homeostasis and molecular biology.
  • Research experience relevant to translational studies of neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Demonstrated experience studying iron transport using both whole-animal and cell culture models of the blood-brain barrier.
  • Expertise in the isolation and characterization of extracellular vesicles.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity, including at least three first-author publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentorship, teamwork, and scientific collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with neurosurgical research techniques and procedures.
  • Evidence of innovation through intellectual property development, such as patent applications.
  • Experience preparing and submitting grant applications to national funding agencies and/or private foundations.
