The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and its ten tenure units are the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. The Department of Historyin the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Modern Korean History (19th century onwards). Successful candidates will advance the History and Global Asian Studies undergraduate programs, the World History graduate program, and initiatives by the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) to internationalize the curriculum. The tenure home of this position will be in the Department of History. The Department is especially interested in applicants working in the following subfields: history of medicine; history of science; history of technology; environmental history; economic history; legal history; citizenship, gender and race; and digital humanities. This position is supported by a generous grant from the Korea Foundation.

This is a full time, benefits-eligible position with an expected start date of August 16, 2027. The position will be on Northeastern’s Boston campus.


Responsibilities

The teaching load will be four courses each academic year. The successful candidate should be able to teach courses in Korean History, East Asian Studies, and other courses specific to their field. They should demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; maintain a record of research; advise students; and serve the Department, the College, and the University. They should also contribute to building the Global Asian Studies Program and Korean Studies at Northeastern.


Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in History or related field in hand by the employment start date is required.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, including a statement on teaching, a CV, a statement of current and future research plans, a writing sample of no more than fifty pages, and contact information for three referees or a dossier service.

The research statement should address the research topics/questions you have worked on in the past, key findings you have discovered, key products (or outputs) of these efforts, funding you have received, as well as research plans for the future. Please also highlight cross-disciplinary research efforts you have undertaken, research done with students or community partners, and/or public facing scholarship.

The teaching statement should summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, and what you would like to teach at Northeastern. Please highlight any pedagogical innovations, experiential learning activities, or strategies for teaching a global student population.

Pay Range:

Assistant Professor: $96,000.00 - $110,000.00
