The Journalism Program, School of Communication and Information (SCI), College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM, Honolulu, Hawai’i) invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3). This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2027, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

The Opportunity:

The (SCI) seeks a scholar, educator or practitioner who is excited about preparing students for a rapidly changing media environment and helping shape the future of journalism education in Hawai'i and the Pacific.

The successful candidate will teach foundational journalism courses and develop upper-division courses in their area of expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates working in contemporary and emerging areas of journalism, such as digital and multimedia journalism, social media and audience engagement, creator journalism, science and environmental journalism, data and investigative reporting, documentary storytelling, AI and emerging technologies, and Indigenous, Hawaiian, or Pacific journalism.

This position offers an opportunity to combine hands-on journalism education with meaningful connections to Hawai'i’s professional media and communities across the state. UHM provides a distinctive setting for exploring journalism across cultures, communities, platforms, and the Pacific region. We seek a collaborative colleague who will mentor students, engage with the profession and contribute to the program’s growth.

UHM, located on the island of O'ahu, is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai'i system and a Tier-1 Research University (Very High Research Activity, Carnegie Classification). Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach assigned undergraduate journalism courses, including required lower-division courses such as JOUR 200 Introduction to Multimedia Journalism and JOUR 250 Media Writing, as well as upper-division elective courses in the faculty member’s area of expertise, and as needed by the program;
2. Conduct research aligned with the standards at the University and maintain an active program of scholarly, professional, creative, or practice-based work appropriate to the faculty member’s area of specialization;
3. Participate in curriculum development and assessment, including the development and revision of courses, instructional materials, and teaching methods;
4. Mentor and advise undergraduate students in the Journalism Program, including assisting students with internships, career preparation, and timely progress toward degree completion;
5. Participate in program, School, College, and University governance and service activities, including faculty committees, program meetings, student recruitment and retention activities and other service assignments;
6. Develop and maintain professional and community relationships that support student learning, internships, career opportunities and the Journalism Program’s engagement with Hawai'i and Pacific communities and media organizations;
7. Contribute to the program’s efforts to recruit, retain and graduate students;
8. Strengthen connections between journalism education and the professional media community;
9. Participate in appropriate professional and community service related to journalism and the faculty member’s area of expertise; and
10. Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D or equivalent terminal degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Journalism or related fields. ABDs will be considered but all degree requirements must be completed and degree conferred prior to date of hire;
2. Demonstrated ability to conduct professional, scholarly, or creative activities in contemporary journalism, including digital, multimedia, or multi-platform journalism;
3. Demonstrated ability to teach journalism and production-oriented, hands-on courses across media at the undergraduate level;
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and contribute to an academic and/or professional community with varying backgrounds;
5. Demonstrated knowledge of current journalism practices, technologies, and ethical standards, including the ability to adapt to emerging forms of news production and audience engagement;
6. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Professional journalism experience in digital-first or multimedia newsrooms.
2. Experience in any of the following: emerging media, social media, creator journalism, or audience engagement; place-based, community, Indigenous, Hawaiian, or Pacific journalism; science/environmental or climate journalism; and/or data journalism, visualization, documentary journalism, or investigative reporting.
3. Experience teaching multimedia journalism or media writing.
4. Experience with AI-assisted journalism or other emerging journalism technologies.
5. Established and ongoing relationships with media organizations in Hawai'i or Pacific region.
