
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, first or second term, with an expected start date of July 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. We seek a scholar whose work specializes in (i) Political Philosophy or in (ii) 19th- and 20th-century European Philosophy, in the French or German tradition.
The selected candidate will pursue their own research agenda, collaborate with faculty in the Department of Philosophy and other areas of the Division of the Arts & Humanities and University, and teach in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year on the quarter system. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program, and service on departmental and university committees.
Salary Range or Pay Grade:
Assistant Professor: $90,000-$120,000; This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses

The department invites applications from candidates specializing in any of the two areas listed above. We seek a colleague with an ambitious research agenda yielding active and innovative scholarship, characterized by cogency of argument, knowledge of the literature, and originality of interpretation. Successful applicants will contribute to the scholarly community of the department and university, and have the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher in the university’s core curriculum, in introductory to advanced undergraduate courses in Philosophy, and in graduate courses related to their area of expertise.
All requirements for receipt of a PhD in a relevant field must be completed prior to the start of the appointment.
