The Department of Biology at Tufts University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Neurobiology to begin September 1, 2027. We seek a scientist pursuing fundamental questions in neurobiology, with particular interest in understanding how neural circuits generate, regulate, and modify behavior.
We welcome applicants working in a broad range of areas, including behavioral and computational neuroscience, sensory and motor systems, neural circuits, and neuroethology. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research integrates multiple levels of analysis, linking behavior and neural systems to underlying physiological, cellular, or molecular mechanisms, or to broader ecological and evolutionary questions. Research using experimentally tractable animal model systems, including invertebrate systems, is encouraged. Candidates should note that the department does not currently have facilities to support research involving human or non-human primates.
The successful candidate will establish and maintain an innovative, externally funded research program and will demonstrate strong potential to mentor research trainees at the postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. Preference will be given to candidates whose research complements existing departmental strengths in neurobiology, physiology, behavior, biomechanics, evolution, and computational biology, while establishing new directions for neuroscience research within the department.
The position offers substantial opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across Tufts University. Potential connections include faculty in the Department of Psychology, the Department of Neuroscience at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Allen Discovery Center. The position will contribute to Tufts' growing research and educational activities in neuroscience, aging, and brain health.
We seek a candidate with strong potential for effective teaching and a demonstrated or invested interest in evidence-based, student-centered pedagogical approaches. The successful candidate will contribute to mentoring and research training undergraduate and graduate students in neurobiology and physiology. Teaching responsibilities are expected to include development of a mid-level course addressing topics such as neural circuits, neural systems, and behavioral neuroscience, together with an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in the candidate's area of expertise.
The Department of Biology has a strong commitment to integrating research and education across biological scales, from molecular and cellular mechanisms to organismal physiology, behavior, and evolution. The successful candidate will join a department with active research programs spanning these levels and will have opportunities to contribute to the continued development of neuroscience teaching and research at Tufts.
A Ph.D. in neurobiology, neuroscience, biology, or a related field and postdoctoral research experience are required.
