The Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Experimental Electrochemistry, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.
This position will be part of a cluster of three faculty hires in electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering designed to strengthen CWRU’s longstanding leadership and expand interdisciplinary activity in this strategically important area. It is part of a strategic effort to expand electrochemical science across CWRU and deepen collaborations among the Department of Chemistry, the Case School of Engineering, and the university’s biomedical and materials research communities. We seek an outstanding experimental scientist who will establish a robust, externally funded research program addressing fundamental and applied challenges in electrochemistry.
Research areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, molecular and interfacial electrochemistry; electrochemical materials and devices; energy conversion and storage; electrocatalysis; bio- or neuroelectrochemistry. The integration of AI/ML, automation, and data-driven approaches with electrochemical discovery and experimentation are welcome. Candidates whose research bridges chemistry with materials science, engineering, computation, or biomedicine are particularly encouraged to apply.
Case Western Reserve University is a leading private research university located in Cleveland’s vibrant University Circle. The university is known for its strengths in interdisciplinary research, academic excellence, and collaboration with world-renowned healthcare, cultural, governmental, and industry partners.
Under the leadership of President Eric W. Kaler, CWRU is guided by three institutional priorities: elevating academic excellence, expanding the research enterprise, and enhancing community engagement and impact. CWRU's rapidly growing research enterprise now encompasses more than $600 million in annual research activity, and the university has experienced among the fastest rates of research-expenditure growth within the Association of American Universities.
The university is also making a major investment in collaborative science through its new $300 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB). Designed to bring scientists and engineers together in a highly interdisciplinary environment, ISEB will create significant opportunities for faculty to pursue research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries.
CWRU has a longstanding international presence in electrochemical science, anchored by the Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences and a strong history of collaboration between Chemistry and Engineering. A recent $10 million investment in energy and electrochemistry is supporting new faculty positions and expanded research capabilities, further strengthening the university's capacity in electrochemical materials, energy technologies, and related areas.
Faculty benefit from extensive university-wide shared research resources, including the Swagelok Center for Surface Analysis of Materials, which provides advanced capabilities for materials and interface characterization, as well as Sears Think[box], one of the nation's largest university-based centers for prototyping, fabrication, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Advanced research computing, university research centers and institutes, and strong administrative support for proposal development and grants management further support faculty research.
CWRU's location within Cleveland's nationally recognized biomedical research ecosystem provides additional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Immediately adjacent to campus are major healthcare and research institutions, including Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The Cleveland Clinic is completing its approximately $1.1 billion Neurological Institute, scheduled to open in 2027, creating additional opportunities for collaborative research in areas including neuroelectrochemistry, sensing, diagnostics, biomaterials, and related fields.
Faculty also have opportunities for collaboration with regional and national partners, including NASA Glenn Research Center, national laboratories, and Northeast Ohio's extensive materials, manufacturing, healthcare, and technology sectors.
CWRU supports innovation and translation through resources for intellectual property development, commercialization, startup creation, and strategic partnerships, providing faculty with opportunities to extend fundamental discoveries toward broader societal impact.
The University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education (UCITE) supports faculty in developing effective and innovative approaches to undergraduate and graduate education.
The annual starting base salary range for this nine-month academic-year appointment is $90,000 - $100,000. CWRU considers factors including, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience and training, relevant skills and accomplishments, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
University employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes healthcare, retirement plans, tuition assistance, and paid time off. Additional information is available through CWRU Human Resources. For more details on CWRU’s benefits, see https://case.edu/hr/benefits.
