Position Summary
The Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, Media & Arts ( HSSMA) invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor, TT (tenure-track) in the Cinema, Television and Emerging Media Studies ( CTEMS) Department at Morehouse College. We seek a specialist in Film or Cinema Studies with additional expertise in African Cinema. This faculty member will have the primary responsibility of teaching introductory core courses in film and television, survey of African cinema, contemporary African Cinema, theory, and may occasionally teach special topics according to the candidate’s areas of specialization and the department’s needs.

This position requires service to the department and the College. The faculty member will support the General Education curriculum as well as co-curricular, creative, and academic activities of the CTEMS department that enhance majors’ and minors’ intellectual development and readiness for graduate school and career positions. The candidate must engage in scholarship and teaching that contributes to the field and be committed to the mission of Morehouse College—to develop men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students and by assuming a special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of Black people. Some teaching experience is preferred for junior candidates. Senior candidates must show evidence of substantial teaching experience.

Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and statement of teaching philosophy. Applicants are also asked to identify their strengths and experiences in assisting Black students and men of color from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to accomplish curricular goals.

Required Qualifications
The minimum qualification for the position is a PhD in film, preferred specialization in African cinema, and some college level teaching experience preferred.
Applicants should be able to:
- Teach course content and other course materials in support of course and learning outcomes and adhere to departmental requirements.
- Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities that will allow students to succeed.
- Schedule and maintain appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment and provide timely communication to students utilizing the Morehouse OLS
- Demonstrate research and potential for scholarly productivity
- Utilize instructional technology (Banner, Canvas, and Starfish) required by Morehouse College, including maintaining an online grade book and keeping accurate records of grades and attendance.

Preferred Qualifications
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in their discipline before or within the semester of the position’s start date with a specialization in African cinema, and some college level teaching experience.

Preferred Education/Experience
Ability to teach fundamental film and television core studies (including History, Theory, Genres, American, African American, World Cinema) with secondary specialization in African Cinema.
A commitment to excellence in teaching; evidence of a productive scholarship program; and service to the profession and community is desired.
Knowledge of pedagogical strategies and methods of student assessment appropriate for teaching undergraduate students.
Demonstrated skill in computer literacy and instructional technology required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A PhD in Film, Cinema, Cinematic Arts, Visual Studies or any equivalent doctoral program with additional specialization in African Cinema.

Physical Demands
Compensation
Salary will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity. Salary will be disbursed in 12 equal monthly installments.

Teaching Responsibility
Minimum 3/ 3 teaching load or 18 credit hours annually.
Specific course assignments and scheduling for each faculty member is determined in consultation with your Department Chair and Division Dea n.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Responsiblities
Responsibilities for this position include teaching, active engagement in scholarship, student advising, and programming that complements the department.
  • Teach courses within the Cinema, Television & Emerging Media Studies Department curriculum by communicating subject matters clearly and effectively through adapted teaching, advising, and coaching methodologies.
  • Provide constructive and timely feedback to assist students in achieving completion of course objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process.
  • Assist in conducting course review, student learning outcomes assessment, and program review.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: creative productions, participating in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, serving in professional organizations, conducting research projects, publishing scholarly works, etc.
  • Participate in CTEMS hosted events, orientations, training, etc., and stay engaged with the Morehouse College community.
  • Meet record keeping obligations on time in accordance with Morehouse policies, e.g. grades, attendance, reports, etc.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of this teaching agreement as directed by the Department Chair.
