Job Description

The Department of English at Arizona State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Computational/Digital Humanities position with an anticipated start date of August 2027. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug 16 – May 15). Note this is a fully in-person position (not remote).

We seek a colleague whose work bridges the humanities and computational methods, and who brings an active research agenda in one or more of the following areas:

  • data analytics and visualization (especially text-based)
  • generative and agentic AI
  • natural language processing within and for the humanities
  • text and corpora analysis
  • computational rhetoric
  • computational literary studies
  • digital archives and cultural heritage informatics
  • network analysis of textual or cultural data
  • machine learning applications in humanistic inquiry
  • digital mapping and spatial humanities
  • critical data studies

We are especially interested in candidates whose innovative research crosses disciplinary boundaries and who have a demonstrated capacity for, or strong interest in, collaborative work with colleagues across the humanities, computing, and data sciences. The successful candidate will join a department aspiring to expand the intellectual and methodological range of humanities scholarship through computational approaches, and will be expected to maintain an active research program, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to the department's growing digital humanities initiatives.

Essential Functions of the job:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct and publish original research and scholarship in digital or computational humanities or related fields.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of departmental need, including in-person and online instruction.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in research and professional development.
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession, including participation on committees and in academic governance.
  • Promote student success and embed teaching and research in societal impact consistent with the ASU Charter.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Linguistics, or other relevant discipline at the time of appointment.
  • Active individual and collaborative research agenda in one or more of the following areas:
  • data analytics and visualization (especially text-based)
  • generative and agentic AI
  • natural language processing within and for the humanities
  • text and corpora analysis
  • computational rhetoric
  • computational literary studies
  • digital archives and cultural heritage informatics
  • network analysis of textual or cultural data
  • machine learning applications in humanistic inquiry
  • digital mapping and spatial humanities
  • critical data studies
  • humanities of the digital
  • other approaches to digital/computational humanities
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in STEM and/or information sciences
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, including the ability to contribute and/or teach in-person courses and online courses in English at ASU

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in computational methods.
  • Track record of collaborative publications, projects, or partnerships spanning the humanities and computing/data sciences specifically.
  • Experience applying for and/or securing research grants from federal, state, and/or private funding sources.
  • Evidence of partnerships or collaboration with not-for-profit organizations or industry
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
