Job Description

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

With the support of Associate Production Director, the assistant production editor oversees about 45 per year fictional picture book titles, novelty titles in the Cartwheel line; and Spanish and school market editions of these formats. Published in hardcover or paperback and simultaneous ebook editions, these titles have short page counts and limited text, and are designed in-house. This assistant-level role collaborates with a small team of editors and designers and receives ongoing help from manager with challenges and issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • With Associate Production Director’s oversight, review and route passes of covers, interiors, and novelty components. They also route sales materials and ebook files.

  • For complex titles, work with manager on specialized processes or schedules.

  • Create biweekly status report and lead a team status meeting, with manager’s support, and follow up on issues.

  • Actively develop skills by joining team meetings, covering for colleagues on vacation, and learning on the job about other areas of production

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Competent copyediting and proofreading skills, suitable for brief, young child-oriented titles

  • Working knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • Ability to meet manager-set deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality

  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat

  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with project stakeholders
