Job Description

The Accelerator Systems Division of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a staff Assistant Physicist position in the Accelerator Operations and Physics (AOP) Group.

The successful candidate will

  • Play a significant role in maintaining the high-reliability operation of the APS storage ring.

  • Perform general accelerator physics activities, including independently conducting machine studies to diagnose and resolve operational issues.

  • Support APS performance improvements by conducting accelerator experiments, processing and analyzing data, and performing simulations and/or theoretical studies.

  • Maintain positive and effective working relationships with APS technical staff through active communication and collaboration.

  • Participate in research and development activities for future accelerator facilities.

  • Document research outcomes and present results at meetings and conferences; publish findings in refereed journals and conference proceedings.

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in accelerator physics or a closely related field with 2+ years of postdoctoral experience.

  • Demonstrated experience operating an accelerator independently and conducting beam experiments.

  • Strong knowledge of accelerator theory, accelerator modeling and simulation, beam control, and beam diagnostics.

  • Familiarity with EPICS-based control systems in a Linux environment.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.
