The Globe and Mail is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Photo Editor, with a love of photography and visual storytelling, who will assign, research, edit and package photography for digital and print platforms.
The successful candidate will have strong news judgment, and a proven ability to work with photographers to help shape story ideas from start to finish. They will be unflappable under daily deadline pressures, and be comfortable working independently as well as in a team setting.
Strong technical editing skills are essential, as is a passion for the future of visual journalism in a digital world.
The Globe and Mail’s visuals team is a multidisciplinary group of designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists and graphic artists. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe’s coverage on everything from long-term investigative projects to breaking news and immersive story formats.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative journalist and a positive advocate within the wider newsroom for the power and value of visuals as core to The Globe’s journalism. They will also have a passion for continually improving processes and workflows in an ever-changing media environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience as a photo editor for a media organization, or equivalent experience and a proven track record as a photojournalist
• A strong, confident understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
• Excellent judgement for what makes a good visual story, from technical and aesthetic details to pacing and story structure
• An ability to evaluate and give feedback on a wide range of freelance pitches and story ideas
• Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography, and an ability to clearly communicate those requirements to other visual journalists
• Conversant on trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals in reaching readers across distributed platforms like Instagram, Apple News and others
• An understanding of digital and print design principles is an asset
• This position will include some evenings and weekend work
This position is based in the Toronto office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
