Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as an Assistant Patient Care Manager in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Margaret M. and George A. Stephen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Comer Children's Hospital is among the largest in the Midwest, with approximately 1,000 admissions every year. Our NICU features 47 designated tertiary care beds (Level III) and 18 convalescent (Level II) beds. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be provided for up to three infants at a time by a special group of ECMO specialists who supplement the NICU nursing staff.

The Assistant Patient Care Manager (APCM) will be responsible and accountable for over-seeing the operations and patient flow of a designated Care Center on her/his respective shift. Duties include completing daily or shift specific quality audits and Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) boards, facilitate daily huddles with staff, and directing delivery of quality, patient-centered care in a financially responsible manner. This is in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Patient Care Manager (PCM). In the absence of the PCM, the APCM assumes responsibility for the unit. APCM supports PCM with 24/7 coverage of the unit.

Essential Job Functions:

• Participates in the interview and selection process of staff

• Helps oversee orientation of new hires

• Maximizes care efficiency and throughput

• Monitors a budget (e.g. supplies)

• Participates with ongoing evaluation of productivity

• Rounds, assesses, and addresses customer and patient satisfaction

• Monitors and reports sentinel events

• Maintains survey and regulatory readiness, Performs audits

• Monitors and promotes workplace safety requirements

• Promotes intra/interdepartmental communication

• Collaborates with other service lines

• Project management: Identifies roles and resources needed & Establishes timelines and milestones

• Supports a structure of shared governance

• Assists with conducting staff evaluations/MAX conversations

• Monitors staff for fitness for duty

• Initiates and delivers corrective actions (e.g. written warning)

• Mentors and coaches staff

• Participates in the Quality Improvement (QI) processes

• Performs other duties as requested by PCM or senior management

Required Qualifications:

• Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher.

• Current Illinois RN license

• Minimum of two years nursing experience.

• Minimum of one year clinical experience in the NICU.

• Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree preferred.
• Specialty certifications preferred.
• NICU experience starting at level III
• Experience working at an academic medical center and in a unionized environment preferred.

• Charge nurse experience with demonstrated leadership skills and/or equivalent experience.

• Shift: Night Shift, (4) 10-hour shifts, Rotating Weekends approximately every 4-6 weeks.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
