Job Description

The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor in Taiwan Literary and Cultural Studies. The appointment will begin in August, 2027.

The successful candidate will be expected to design and implement courses centered on Taiwanese literature, film and media studies, and cultural studies. The candidate will also collaborate with faculty in the East Asian section as well as across SILC to create courses on transnational, interdisciplinary, and comparative topics that put Taiwan studies in dialogue with broader regional and global currents in literary, film, cultural, translation, and Sinophone studies.

In light of ASU’s growing engagement with Taiwan, the successful candidate will also play a crucial role as liaison for the school and university in ASU’s Taiwan-centered initiatives.

Essential Functions for the Position

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Design and implement two courses per semester on the topic of Taiwanese literary, film/media, and/or cultural studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Contribute to curriculum development in the East Asian section and SILC more broadly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at ASU to develop Taiwan-related activities such as exchange programs, student events, and interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Supervise honors, masters, and doctoral students.
  • Conduct research and publish in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and presses.
  • Participate in professional and university service as appropriate for rank.

Required Qualifications (Assistant):

  • A Ph.D. in East Asian Studies, Chinese literature, or a related humanities field. ABD candidates will be considered, but the candidate must have a Ph.D. conferred by the time of appointment.
  • Proficiency in both modern Mandarin Chinese and English.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the university level.
  • Evidence of clear research agenda and scholarly publication trajectory.

Required Qualifications (Associate):

  • A Ph.D. in East Asian Studies, Chinese literature, or a related humanities field.
  • Proficiency in both modern Mandarin Chinese and English.
  • Record of publication in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and presses.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and curriculum design at the university level.

Desired Qualifications (for both Assistant and Associate levels):

  • Research and teaching experience in interdisciplinary, transnational, and comparative East Asian topics.
  • Research and teaching expertise in literary Sinitic and/or a second Asian language or culture.
  • Ability to teach content courses in Chinese.
  • Ability to use basic instructional technology (i.e., Canvas).
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.

Candidates will be asked to create or use an existing Interfolio Dossier to submit the following application materials:

  • one scholarly writing sample (in English, and of no more than 30 pages).
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g. quantitative and sample of qualitative data from teaching evaluations, if available).
  • statement of teaching philosophy (no more than 2 pages).
