
The Department of Psychology at the University of Maine invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant or Associate Professor and Director of the Psychological Services Center. This is a 10.5-month (September 1st through July 15th), position with administrative, clinical, supervisory, research, and teaching responsibilities.
This position provides unique opportunities for a clinical psychologist interested in a career that combines leadership, research, and teaching. We encourage applicants with experience integrating clinical research and service or who can envision innovative approaches to such integration.
The director is responsible for administration and leadership of the Psychological Services Center (PSC), the in-house training clinic for the doctoral program in clinical psychology. The program has enjoyed continuous APA accreditation since 1975 and is the only accredited clinical psychology program in the state. Every student in the doctoral program starts their practicum training at the PSC, under close supervision of the director and clinical supervisors. Students carry PSC cases throughout their training. The director of the PSC works closely with the other clinical faculty to assure that student’s clinical experiences align with the program’s mission and values.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1) Administration (50%): The director is responsible for administration of the Psychological Services Center including managing the clinic budget, waiting list, case and supervisor assignments, marketing, contracts, and interactions with the public.
The PSC’s administrative assistant reports to the PSC director and the director evaluates the administrative assistant in accordance with university policies and procedures. The director supervises the graduate student associate director.
The director works with the director of clinical training to assure that there is adequate clinical supervision available for student clinicians and to arrange and oversee external practicum placements; the director is the program’s contact person for supervisors at external practicum sites.
The director represents the PSC to the public and identifies, secures, and stewards creative revenue generating partnerships to provide much needed services to Maine citizens and valuable experiential learning opportunities for students (e.g., with school systems, government agencies, nonprofits).
The director ensures that the clinic’s facilities (e.g., IT, physical plant) are maintained and updated as needed.
The director of the PSC advises and collaborates with the rest of the department’s clinical faculty in all matters related to students’ clinical training.
The director is responsible for organizing and leading an orientation to the Psychological Services Center each year (typically in June) for students enrolled in Practicum (PSY691) for the first time. For example, the director will cover clinical interviewing, case record writing, and emergency planning for student clinicians in their orientation to the PSC.
The director is expected to participate in service on campus as appropriate. Service to the profession and the public is also recognized.
The director serves as a clinical supervisor of student-clinicians and is available to provide supervision on an ad hoc temporary basis as needed.
2) Teaching (25%): The ordinary teaching assignment is 1/1 (the regular load in the department is 2/2) Course assignments are determined by the chair in consultation with the faculty member and will include undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to the faculty member’s expertise. Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students is also expected.
3) Research (25%): Develop and maintain an active and productive research program, including pursuit of external funding for research.
Departmental evaluation criteria will apply, commensurate with the 50% administrative, 25% teaching, and 25% research responsibilities rather than the typical department ratio of 50% Teaching and 50% Research.
