Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a burn surgeon at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to join the Division of Burn Surgery within the Department of Surgery and the Johns Hopkins Burn Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

The successful candidate will join a high-volume academic burn program and work closely with the burn surgery team and multidisciplinary burn care team while developing an academic career in burn surgery, surgical critical care, reconstruction, research, education, quality improvement, or related areas of interest.

The Johns Hopkins Burn Center is an American Burn Association-verified and Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS)-designated burn center and is the only adult burn center (age 15+) in the state of Maryland. The center provides comprehensive care across the full continuum of burn injury, including acute resuscitation, critical care, operative management, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and long-term outpatient care.

The Burn Center manages a high-volume and complex patient population, including more than 700 patients annually across inpatient and observation settings, in addition to thousands of outpatient encounters through dedicated Burn/Wound Clinics. The center includes a 10-bed Burn ICU, a 10-bed step-down unit, a dedicated operating room, and a specialized rehabilitation gym, allowing integrated multidisciplinary care for patients with complex burn injuries.

Faculty surgeons manage the full spectrum of acute burn surgery, including excision and grafting, complex wound management, critical care, and post-burn reconstruction. Surgeons practice in close collaboration with trauma surgeons, plastic surgeons, advanced practice providers, specialized burn nursing staff, therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, and other members of the multidisciplinary burn team.

As a member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty, the successful candidate will have access to extensive institutional resources in clinical and translational research, outcomes science, health services/policy research, surgical innovation, and medical education. Faculty are expected to participate in the education of residents, fellows, medical students, and other members of the burn care team and will be encouraged to develop an academic program aligned with their individual interests and career goals. Faculty are also expected to engage with the American Burn Association with the mission of delivering and innovating excellence in burn care.

The Division of Burn Surgery provides a highly collaborative environment for professional growth. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide outstanding clinical care while contributing to the clinical, educational, research, and quality missions of the division and the Johns Hopkins Burn Center. Mentorship and support for academic advancement will be integral components of the position.

Faculty will also participate in Burn Center quality improvement, American Burn Association verification activities, community outreach, burn prevention, and regional and national initiatives that advance the care of patients with burn injuries.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Board eligible or board certified in General Surgery through the American Board of Surgery or Plastic Surgery through the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
  • Board eligible or board certified in Surgical Critical Care through the American Board of Surgery.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in the state of Maryland.
  • Completion of a burn fellowship or equivalent training and experience in burn surgery.
  • Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) provider certification (to obtained within 6 months of appointment).
  • Willingness to obtain ABLS instructor certification within two years of appointment.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in the care of patients with acute burn injuries.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary, patient-centered burn care.
  • Interest in developing an academic career in one or more areas including clinical or translational research, outcomes research, health services/policy research, quality improvement, surgical innovation, education, burn prevention, or advocacy.
  • Commitment to teaching residents, fellows, medical students, advanced practice providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary burn team.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Vaccine Requirements

Johns Hopkins University strongly encourages, but no longer requires, at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This change does not apply to the School of Medicine (SOM). The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those candidates who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
