
Program management and leadership
• Supports the manager with the day-to-day operations of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) department.
• Assists with infection prevention initiatives, surveillance, education, and regulatory compliance for designated areas of the organization.
• Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the annual infection prevention plan and program to ensure alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
• Mentors, coaches, and supervises infection preventionists and other staff as delegated.
• Collaborates with IP manager and other hospital leaders to implement evidence-based infection control practices.
• Manages specific projects or focus areas as assigned.
• Assumes full managerial responsibilities during the manager’s absence, including leading the infection prevention team, liaising with hospital leadership, and managing outbreak responses.
• Provides input and feedback on employee performance evaluations to support team member growth.
• Participates in the interview process and offer informed recommendations to help ensure candidates are a good fit for the team’s dynamics and organizational culture.
• Supports and assists with the disciplinary process, ensuring adherence to organizational policies.
• Oversees and directs team members in daily operations and project implementation.
• Provides guidance to and supports other hospital departments and administration in infection prevention initiatives and requirements in the manager’s absence.
• In manager’s absence, maintains 24-hour accountability to address issues raised by team members and providers, is on-call, and is designated as essential personnel critical to the continuity of healthcare operations, ensuring timely infection control guidance and rapid response to potential infection risks, even during emergencies or staffing shortages.
Surveillance and reporting
• Guides surveillance activities for multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
• Implements infection prevention protocols and ensures compliance.
• Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of data reporting to regulatory bodies like the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and local and state health departments.
• Assists with the statistical analysis of infection data to identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of the infection prevention program.
• Participates in outbreak investigations and report findings to the director, hospital leadership, and local health officials.
Policy, compliance, and education
• Develops and revises infection prevention policies and action plans.
• Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local infection control regulations, including standards from organizations like The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
• Provides education and consultation to hospital personnel on infection prevention practices and protocols.
• Advises on infection control requirements during renovation or construction projects.
• Conduct environmental rounds to monitor adherence to infection control standards.
