Education and Work Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years retail experience.
  • Previous experience as a supervisor preferred.
  • POS system or Cash Register experience within last 6-months in a retail environment
  • Daily cash reconciliation and deposit experience

Scope of Position

The Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting with assigned aspects of the Thrift Store’s day-to-day operations. This includes, but is not limited to, processing of donations for salvage and resale, sales and display of merchandise, scheduling of pickups and deliveries, supervision of staff, maintaining records of a personal nature, sales and production. Able to run Thrift Store in the Managers absence.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Possess valid Driver’s License and have access to a motor vehicle.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills, and good phone etiquette.
  • Ability to operate a POS system and/or a cash register, 10 key, business phone system, and fax/copier workstation.
  • Ability to operate hand truck and pallet jack.
  • Possess basic Computer skills. Be familiar with Word and Excel.
  • Possess a cordial and professional business presence with the ability to work with people of all sorts.
  • Be teachable and have the ability to work well with a minimum of supervision.
  • Possess basic Computer skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As assigned, will be responsible for or assist in:

  • Have the Store ready for business and open on time. At closing, ensure the Store’s systems are turned down or shut off, as the case may be, and that the Store is secured.
  • Schedule employees, volunteers, and community service workers to ensure appropriate level of staffing is present at all times.
  • Supervise employees, volunteers, and community service workers to performance of duties to ensure compliance with published directives and guidelines.
  • Keep personnel informed of policies and directives.
  • Provide training for personnel on Store policies and procedures and the level of customer service expected by the Salvation Army.
  • Maintain safe working environment for employees, volunteers and community service workers and participate in monthly Safety Committee meetings.
  • Correct preparation of paperwork and reports as required.
  • Maintain adequate amount of change at beginning of each day, safeguarding cash in registers at all times and banking of cash receipts and deposits at the end of business day. Strict adherence to approved money handling procedures must be observed.
  • Maintain good customer relations with customers and the community, assisting assist customers and donors promptly and courteously.
  • Respond appropriately to customer concerns and complaints, referring unresolved matters to the Store Manager.
  • Sorting, hanging, pricing, and displaying donations. Ensure outdating and rotation of stock.
  • Ensure Store’s interior and exterior is maintained in an orderly and clean fashion.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50lbs for short distances. Occasional lifting in excess of 50lbs aided by appropriate equipment observing safety procedures.
  • Able to climb a ladder and climb stairs.
  • Able to walk, kneel, twist, push, pull, bend, stoop, sit, and stand for short/long periods of time.
  • Have sense of smell and touch, identify colors, and have close vision. Have finger dexterity, be able to speak, read, and write in English.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in areas with occasional loud noises, exposure to household cleansers, exposure to inside and outside temperature variations, exposure to dust and molds, while standing on cement floors. Proper Personal Protective Equipment is made available to all employees. May require operation of company owned vehicles.
