The Bakers Arms, Sewardstone

Assistant Manager

Salary - £31,000 - £35,000 + Bonus

Ready to grow your hospitality career and become part of a great team?

We're looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Manager to join The Bakers Arms in Sewardstone. If you're hardworking, reliable and passionate about giving guests a fantastic experience, this could be the perfect opportunity to develop your skills and take the next step in hospitality.

Whether you're already an experienced supervisor or Assistant Manager looking to build on your experience, or you're ready to learn and take on more responsibility, we're keen to hear from someone with the right attitude. With a supportive General Manager who is happy to coach and develop the right person, you'll have the opportunity to learn new ways of working, grow in confidence and make a real difference.

Why join The Bakers Arms?

You'll be joining a welcoming countryside pub with plenty of character and a great opportunity to learn from an experienced and supportive General Manager.

This role is about more than keeping the pub running day to day. It's a chance to develop your confidence, build your leadership skills and play an important part in creating a great experience for both guests and colleagues.

Job Description

What's the opportunity?

The Bakers Arms is a traditional countryside pub in Sewardstone, close to the historic town of Waltham Abbey. We're all about great pub food, a warm welcome and creating a place where guests love to spend time.

From juicy burgers and hand-battered fish and chips to our much-loved Sunday roasts, there's something for everyone. Our tree-lined beer garden is perfect for enjoying a drink in the sunshine, and our dog-friendly atmosphere makes us a favourite stop after exploring the surrounding countryside.

As Assistant Manager, you'll support the General Manager in the day-to-day running of the pub, helping the team deliver great service while learning how to drive standards and business performance.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Leading by example: Support the team during service, maintain high standards and help create a positive working environment.
  • Delivering great guest experiences: Make every guest feel welcome and ensure any questions or concerns are handled with care.
  • Supporting your team: Work collaboratively with colleagues, helping them feel confident, motivated and ready to deliver their best.
  • Keeping things running smoothly: Assist with daily operations, organisation and maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming pub.
  • Learning and developing: Work closely with the General Manager to build your management skills, embrace new ways of working and take on greater responsibility.
  • Growing the business: Help promote the pub, engage with the local community and, if you're confident with social media, bring ideas to help showcase what makes The Bakers Arms special.
  • Maintaining standards: Support compliance, operational procedures and the smooth running of the pub.

Qualifications

What we're looking for

Experience in hospitality or a supervisory role would be beneficial, but attitude, reliability and a willingness to learn are just as important.

You'll bring:

  • A strong work ethic and a reliable, punctual approach.
  • A genuine passion for customer service and making guests feel welcome.
  • A team-first attitude and the ability to support colleagues.
  • An open mind and enthusiasm for learning new skills and adapting to new ways of working.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • The confidence to take initiative while knowing when to ask for support.
  • An interest in social media and promoting the pub would be a bonus.

We're looking for someone who wants to develop, takes pride in their work and is willing to get stuck in. You'll have a supportive General Manager who is happy to invest time in teaching and coaching you, so this is a great opportunity to build your management experience.

Personal Licence: As this role may involve covering the business in the General Manager's absence, you'll need to be eligible to hold a Personal Licence. You don't need to have one when you apply. If you're successful, Greene King will support you through the process of obtaining your licence.
