Assistant Groundskeeper | Taupō, New Zealand

About the Role

Huka Lodge, long regarded as one of the world's most revered luxury accommodations, is set among established gardens along the banks of the Waikato River. We are seeking a passionate Assistant Groundskeeper to help care for our beautiful lodge and eight acres of gardens.

In this role, you will support the Groundskeeper in maintaining the lodge's grounds and gardens to the highest standard, while occasionally sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for the gardens directly with guests.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Measuring moisture levels and carrying out remedial watering of all lodge lawns in the Groundskeeper's absence, including operating the irrigation system software
  • Maintaining and caring for all lawn mowing equipment, and mowing and caring for lodge lawns
  • Safely using and handling chemicals and sprays
  • Assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of all gardens at the lodge and staff house
  • Assisting with training new team members in the department
  • Maintaining a clean, tidy working environment and ensuring correct use of equipment
  • Planting and weeding gardens and grounds as directed
  • Removing garden waste and disposing of it appropriately
  • Cleaning and storing all tools and implements at the end of each day
  • Assisting with other maintenance duties as required, particularly during colleagues' leave

About You

You are a passionate and hands-on groundsperson who takes pride in tending to a landscape as remarkable as Huka Lodge's gardens.

You will ideally have:

  • A genuine passion for the landscape, along with knowledge of planting, pruning, composting, fertilising, and irrigation
  • The fitness and resilience to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • A pleasant, confident manner, comfortable sharing the gardens with guests when required
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work Monday to Friday with some weekends
  • Current New Zealand working rights
