Job Description

The Business Development Lead will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, negotiating, and executing business development opportunities within the Indian pharmaceutical market. The role requires strong expertise in licensing, portfolio strategy, market intelligence, commercial evaluation, and stakeholder management. The incumbent will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely execution of strategic initiatives while maximizing business value.

Essential Functions

Market & Product Opportunity Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive market research to identify therapy gaps, emerging market trends, and competitive landscape.
  • Evaluate opportunities for new product introductions across generic, specialty, complex generics, and biosimilars.
  • Assess market attractiveness, commercial viability, pricing, and return on investment for potential products.

Business Development & In-Licensing

  • Identify, evaluate, and execute product in-licensing opportunities from domestic and international pharmaceutical companies.
  • Lead commercial and technical due diligence in collaboration with Regulatory, Medical, R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, and Finance teams.
  • Prepare business cases, financial models, and commercial assessments for management approval.
  • Negotiate commercial terms, licensing agreements, and strategic partnerships with support from Legal and Regulatory teams.

Portfolio Strategy & Pipeline Development

  • Develop and maintain a robust product opportunity pipeline aligned with organizational growth objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful planning and execution of New Product Introductions (NPIs).
  • Support portfolio prioritization based on market potential, competitive dynamics, and organizational capabilities.

Strategic Partnerships

  • Build and strengthen relationships with pharmaceutical companies, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs), technology partners, and other strategic stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences, business forums, licensing events, and partner meetings.
  • Identify collaboration opportunities that enhance the company's product portfolio and market presence.

Cross-Functional Project Management

  • Coordinate with Regulatory Affairs, Marketing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Finance, Medical Affairs, and Legal teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Monitor project milestones, identify execution risks, and implement mitigation plans to ensure launch readiness.
  • Provide regular updates on business development activities, partnership progress, and pipeline status to senior leadership.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Track industry trends, regulatory developments, and competitor activities impacting the Indian pharmaceutical market.
  • Support annual business planning and long-term portfolio strategy.
  • Develop commercial forecasts and evaluate financial feasibility of new business opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, company policies, and ethical standards.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to strengthening business development capabilities within the organization.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of the Indian pharmaceutical industry and market dynamics.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical licensing, strategic alliances, portfolio management, and commercial evaluation.
  • Working knowledge of Indian regulatory requirements, including DCGI/CDSCO guidelines.
  • Strong analytical, financial evaluation, and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, negotiation, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of business acumen, ownership, and execution excellence.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related discipline
  • MBA (Marketing/Finance/Strategy) preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in Business Development, Licensing, Strategic Alliances, Portfolio Management, or Commercial Strategy within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven experience in product licensing, commercial negotiations, and partnership management.
  • Experience evaluating generic, specialty, complex generic, or biosimilar opportunities is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional project management and execution of strategic initiatives.
