What You'll Do

As Assistant General Counsel, you will report to Freeman Health System’s Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and be a trusted advisor to the health system. You will engage in legal services including preparation, review, and revision of agreements, providing legal counsel and guidance related to health care operational and transactional matters with oversight and direction from the CLO. You will assist with legal research for Risk Management and Compliance. You will have ample opportunities to learn while harnessing your knowledge, skills, and abilities to deliver within an in-house legal function that is nimble, responsive, and innovative in problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Risk Management and Compliance on emergent issues requiring legal interpretation of Arkansas state law, such as releases, subpoenas, holds, guardianships, consent, and capacity.

  • Draft, review, and revise policies to conform to regulatory requirements and governance structure.

  • Review and assist with litigation issues, including subpoenas, records requests, discovery gathering, and managing of outside counsel.

  • Coordinate with outside counsel on matters requiring subject matter expertise.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert to multiple areas of the business during periods of high growth, ensuring that processes, procedures, and foundations for decision making are supported by best practice and working knowledge of current industry regulations.

  • Advising clients on a variety of legal issues related to health care, including regulatory compliance, contracts, and transactions.

  • Representing clients in negotiations, mediations, and other legal proceedings.

  • Conducting legal research and analysis to support client needs.

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and other legal documents.

  • Providing training and education to clients on various legal topics.

  • Staying current on developments in the health care industry and related laws and regulations.

  • All other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the America Bar Association.

  • Active Arkansas Bar license. The position will physically be located in Springdale, Arkansas with occasional travel to Missouri, and to courthouses and clinics in the NWA region.

  • At least two years of prior experience in health care law. Prior experience with contracts, litigation, and regulatory compliance a plus.

  • English language proficiency required. Bilingual Spanish fluency would be a plus.
