Job Description

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking two Assistant Facility Managers for Arlington Mill Community Center and Thomas Jefferson Community Center. The Manager is responsible for providing on-site, day-to-day operations of the facility to accommodate various DPR internal/external activities, programs, and rentals. This position will supervise staff and serve as the Person-in-Charge (PIC) during assigned shifts and/or in the absence of the DPR Facilities Manager.

Arlington Mill Community Center features a full-size gymnasium striped for basketball, and pickleball, multi-purpose rooms for various types of programming and meetings, a senior lounge, a teen lounge, a game room, a fitness room, an Esports Gaming Lounge, two story garage and home to two non-profit agencies. Additionally, the outdoor amenities include a multi-use plaza and a small playground.

Thomas Jefferson Community Center is a joint-use facility with Arlington Public Schools that features a large gymnasium area with an indoor track, basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts; an auxiliary gym area, fitness room, personal training area; free weight room; arts studio; woodshop; large multipurpose room, game room, locker rooms, concession area and stock room. Additionally, outdoor amenities include multiuse fields, a small playground, and outside basketball and tennis courts.

Specific duties include:  

  • Assisting the Facility Manager with overseeing the daily operations of the facility and associated outdoor spaces, including adherence to standard operations procedures, ensuring adequate staffing levels, and operational needs of users are met;

  • Supervising facility monitors and customer service representatives including hiring, training, assigning work and providing performance feedback;

  • Facilitating room rentals and large events in the facility and setting up rooms for programs, rentals and events, ensuring equipment is available and operational;

  • Responding to customer inquiries and concerns, interacting daily with patrons of the facility, cultivating community relationships, and processing facility requests;

  • Overseeing cash handling processes including program registrations, and fee reductions, and reconciling receipts;

  • Ensuring contracted work (e.g., maintenance, cleaning, sanitation, pest control) is performed as scheduled and according to specification;

  • Providing access to locked areas for contractors, parks, and custodial staff; and

  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma/equivalent; and

  • Some experience managing recreation programs and activities in a large multi-service-based facility, center, or similar environment.

Substitution: Additional education may substitute for experience. Additional experience may be a substitute for education.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working in a local government setting;

  • Managing a large and diverse staff;

  • Using RecTrac or similar web-based scheduling, registration, and payment system;

  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); and

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).

Possession of one or more of the following Certifications/Licenses preferred

  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP);

  • Facility Management Professional (FMP);

  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and MAT.

Substitution Additional education may be substituted for experience. Additional experience may be substituted for education.

Additional Information:

Work Hours: Employees are required to work mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and occasional holidays, along with the following center schedules;

  • Arlington Mill Community Center hours vary between 6:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday, on a rotating schedule.

  • Thomas Jefferson Community Center hours range Monday - Sunday; hours vary between 6:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., on a rotating schedule based on the facilities schedule and events.
