Assistant District Attorney – Superior Court

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Superior Court Assistant District Attorney (ADA).This position is under the general supervision of the First Assistant District Attorney - Prosecution.

The Superior Court ADA represents the Commonwealth in accordance with the District Attorney’s statutory authority in the various courts in Norfolk County, the Supreme Judicial Court, the Appeals Court and courts in other counties.

Employees of the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office serve at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Duties and Responsibilities

Represent the Commonwealth at all stages of criminal prosecutions.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Review case files, applicable statutes and case law, victim information and input, police reports and charging decisions made by police agencies and make appropriate recommendations and changes as needed.
  • Review and assess materials forwarded from District Court for indictment consideration;
  • Conduct Grand Jury investigations; prepare and present cases to the Grand Jury for indictment consideration
  • Handle arraignments and corresponding motions such as bail requests, conditions of release, dangerousness hearings, and bail revocation hearings in all courts (including Juvenile, District and Superior Court as appropriate)
  • Handle all pre-trial motions, evidentiary and non-evidentiary motions to suppress and dismiss, and prepare written memoranda and briefs where appropriate.
  • Prepare and present motions in limine and witness voir dire motions for third-party records under Mass. R. Crim. Pro 17.
  • Interview police, civilian, and expert witnesses and prepare them to testify.
  • Conference cases for trial preparation and dispositional decisions. Dispose of cases by plea, bench, or jury trial.
  • Serve in an “on-call capacity” as needed;
  • Mentor District Court ADA’s;
  • Work closely with colleagues, office staff, victim witness advocates, law enforcement officers, court personnel, criminal justice agencies, community partners, and the public to ensure an ethical, effective, fair, and professional approach to prosecution on behalf of victims and the communities we serve.
  • Review all forms of documentary materials, interacting with victims and witnesses, preparing discovery, and provide discovery to defense counsel.
  • Maintain an understanding of all applicable rules, laws, court procedures, statutes and guidelines, including the Rules of Criminal Procedure, the Massachusetts Guide to Evidence, and the mandates of the Victims’ Bill of Rights.
  • Ability to manage crises and excel in high-stress, dynamic, and fast-paced environment while exhibiting and maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • General administrative duties to include filing, faxing, photocopying, etc.
  • Perform any other duties at any jobsite as may from time to time be assigned to her/him by the District Attorney, and/or the First Assistant District Attorney or other designee of the District Attorney.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate and license to practice in Massachusetts
  • 5+ years of criminal litigation experience
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills
  • Advanced communication skills and the ability to share and provide information in a clear and articulate manner
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize time sensitive matters and ensure that all deadlines are met
  • Attention to detail, ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, positive attitude and willingness to learn new processes and to adapt to new procedures and protocols as needed

Salary: $90,000 – $115,000, commensurate with experience.

Full-time positions offer a state benefit package that includes medical/dental/vision insurance, life and disability insurance, retirement plans, and paid vacation, personal and sick leave and paid parental leave.
