Job Description

[What the role is]

The Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science Group in the National Environment Agency (NEA) is the national authority for radiation protection in Singapore and serves to protect the public, radiation workers and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation. Its Nuclear Safety Division is responsible for developing capabilities, plans and ecosystems to support national nuclear safety & security assessment, radiological emergency response, and nuclear regulatory development efforts. The division is also responsible for ensuring that Singapore fulfils its obligations to international conventions and agreements with respect to the safe and peaceful use of nuclear material and technology.

Singapore is studying the potential deployment of nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy strategy. Singapore will also need to prepare for the possibility of nuclear power deployment by other countries in the region. These endeavours involve deepening connections with international and regional nuclear regulatory ecosystems, as well as to developing domestic nuclear research and technical support ecosystem required to ensure nuclear safety, security and safeguards.

You will be a key member of the team that will play a pivotal role in engaging domestic, regional and international stakeholders with the intent of supporting overall WOG public communication and education efforts, to educate and engage the media, public and various stakeholders on nuclear energy and safety.

[What you will be working on]

Nuclear is a complex and emotive topic, and requires a diverse range of expertise to fully assess its implications for Singapore.

By joining this team, you will have the opportunity to shape Singapore’s nuclear regulatory landscape, collaborate with international experts, and contribute to nuclear safety, security, safeguards and radiation protection capability building efforts domestically and regionally.

  • Drive Singapore's international and regional engagement efforts to advance capability building and Singapore's interests in the field of public communications, including sharing of best practices, exchanging of expertise, co-designing joint projects to develop communications capacity among partner countries
  • Pursue and maintain bilateral and multilateral networks with various international stakeholders in the field of public communications, through participation in international stakeholder engagement forums and conferences
  • Coordinate interagency work on nuclear safety communications, including crisis communications, to ensure consistency in messaging and tone in stakeholder interactions, including media relations and public statements
  • Support WOG’s overall public communication and education efforts, ensuring alignment of key messages with the overall WOG communications and engagement strategy to educate and engage the media and public on nuclear energy and safety
  • Maintain oversight and support, as its implementing agency, Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute’s public communication and education efforts and other matters.

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess:

  • Degree in comms/engineering.
  • 5-10 years of experience in corporate communications, external communications or public relations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to translate complex policy into simple terms for public consumption, crisis communications management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Comfortable operating in fast-paced and collaborative environments.
  • Able to work in a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work efficiently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Able to adapt to changes and has a positive work attitude.
  • Highly motivated, meticulous and takes initiative.
  • Aptitude to understand concepts in radiation protection and nuclear technology.
  • Able to travel overseas for official trips.
