Job Description

Kenyon College is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Director of Student Engagement. In cooperation with other Student Affairs staff members, the Assistant Director shares an awareness of and concern for all aspects of student academic, residential, and co-curricular life. In particular, the Assistant Director of Student Engagement will support the ongoing work of student organization finance management and will serve as the department’s advisor to the campus programming board. The Assistant Director of Student Engagement is an eleven (11) month reporting position. The work of the Assistant Director of Student Engagement includes regular evening and weekend responsibilities.

The scope of the Assistant Director’s responsibilities includes:

  • Campus programming board.
  • Advise the Business & Finance Committee (B.F.C) of Student Council.
  • Coordinate financial processes for registered student organizations.
  • Welcome Week evening social programming.
  • Late Night Bites.
  • Co-supervision of student intern staff.

SOCIAL BOARD (40%)

  • Advise Social Board (the campus activities programming board), providing support and oversight to weekly board activities and events.
  • Meet weekly with Social Board leadership to craft meeting agendas and identify areas of need.
  • Attend weekly executive and associate Social Board meetings, providing guidance and support for programming both on and off-campus.
  • Provide support for major Social Board events (including off-campus trips), particularly on nights and weekends.
  • Review and sign all contracts for Social Board events.
  • Supervise Social Board’s finances in order to ensure sound financial management and authorization of expenditures of roughly $150,000.
  • Oversee and execute a Summer Sendoff (concert/entertainment) event in collaboration with Social Board members.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION BUDGET SUPPORT (40%)

  • Support the Business and Finance Committee (BFC) of Student Council.
  • Oversee daily committee operations including familiarity with the Student Council bylaws and the Student Organization handbook policies.
  • Supervise the Vice President of BFC in weekly office hours.
  • Regularly prepare reports on student activity fee expenditures.
  • Review and approve all expenditures of the student activity fee, approximately $500,000.
  • Ensure financial expenditures are updated and reports are accessible through the student organization management platform.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for student requests for funding for programming and events.
  • Track gifts and donations for student organizations.

PROGRAMMING & EVENT COORDINATION (15%)

  • Plan, implement, execute, and assess orientation and Welcome Week social programming at the start of the fall semester.
  • Collaborate with AVI Dining to solicit campus volunteers and host the annual Late Night Bites prior to final exams each semester.
  • Plan and execute additional both small and large-scale programming on behalf of the Office of Student Engagement.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES (5%)

  • Hire, train, and supervise one or more student interns on work ranging from general office assistance to long-term special projects.
  • Partner with campus offices as appropriate, such as the Offices of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Civil Rights & Title IX, Residential Life, Community Partnerships and Academic Affairs.
  • Participate in activities, meetings, and events as a member of the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Serve on campus committees as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed in an office environment but may also require being able to navigate between and within campus facilities including up and down stairs and being outside in various weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet campus requirements to drive campus vehicles. Ability to lift and carry 20 pounds regularly and move tables, chairs, and other furniture. Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field preferred, bachelor's degree required. Experience working with student activities, especially student organization financial management platforms, is preferred. Committed to and familiar with the values and needs of a small, private, residential liberal arts college. Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an understanding of the unique intersections of identity and the student experience. Strong sense of organizational and administrative skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated interest in working with and mentoring college students.
