Job Description

Assistant Special Education (SPED) Director

The Assistant Special Education Director works out of the Administrative Office, and assists in overseeing all relevant programs and staff at each of the schools.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide support on elevated cases.

• Responsible for department communication updates.

• Troubleshoot integrity failure on SPED data in PowerSchool.

• Review and investigate SPED related vendor invoices.

• Act as liaison for ADE requests for mediation, state complaint, or due process complaint.

• assist in Monitoring compliance to State and Federal regulations.

• Lead training meetings as needed locations.

• Conduct compliance monitoring activities for ADE & ESS.

• Assist with SPED related grant applications as needed.

• Review SPED portion of school budget meetings and offer guidance to school administration.

• Assists in supervision of all Special Education programs, 504 plans, and SEI programs (example: ESS Annual Child Find and FERPA training).

• Assists Special Education staff at each of the schools, overseeing these teachers’ work and guiding their continued professional development.

• Assists in all relevant SPED/504/SEI paperwork and files at the network and academy levels, ensuring compliance with State and Federal guidelines.

• Works directly with the Principals and other District staff to develop workshops and staff development opportunities related to Special Education.

• Assists in Facilitate State Surveys, review feedback and lead continuous improvement work

• Assists in Administering online SPED tools and provide support to the school SPED instructors.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Competencies & Strengths

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education

Experience: At least five years direct experience as special education teacher, special education administrator or school psychologist.

Licenses or certifications: Possess a valid Arizona Cross-Categorical or equivalent, administrative or school psychologist certification.

Special Skills:

• Experience in assessing learning disorders and responding with the appropriate interventions

• Proven effective classroom and student behavior management skills

• Knowledge of current special education practices and methodologies

• Knowledge and understanding of State, local, and federal regulations and policies affecting special education

• Working knowledge of educational technology applications, experience with IEP Pro and Assistive Technology preferred

Type of fingerprint clearance: Shall be fingerprint checked pursuant to A.R.S 15-512

Physical functions: Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment. Reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Equipment used: Frequent computer use is expected.

Work Environment: Typical office environment is expected; occasional exposure to outdoor weather
