Assistant Director of Nursing - Hospital - GBGreat Bend Medical Office Building

Career Interest:

The Assistant Director of Nursing – Hospital - GB manages the activities related to Great Bend hospital nursing operations and is responsible for coordination, supervision, and direction of patient flow, staffing, problem recognition and resolution, recruitment, staff development, retention and engagement, budget, and customer service for each area under their oversight.

The Assistant Director is expected to keep current on regulations and standards as they apply to the respective areas. Acts as a role model and provides leadership for all department activities is an expectation of this position. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Manages resources and personnel to stay within budget for each area under their oversight. Provides and implements cost-savings ideas and works closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and staff to implement cost-savings initiatives.
  • Gathers, records, and analyzes data specific to budget, productivity, quality measures, utilization, etc. and implements strategies to increase revenue and quality and decrease expenses. Assures charges are entered timely and accurately.
  • Monitors and communicates status of quality measures and compliance with policies. Implements strategies to assure compliance with policies and practices.
  • Assists Chief Nursing Officer in review, revision, and development of policies to meet standards and requirements. Assists with communication of policy and practice changes, revisions, regulatory standards, balanced score card data, etc. to staff and physicians. Coordinates in-services and staff educational opportunities.
  • Coordinates staffing on a daily basis to meet patient care needs and remain within budget. Demonstrates ability to function as a staff nurse as needed.
  • Assures staff, contractor or vendor validation and/or competencies are current, completed timely, and documented appropriately. Identifies and provides learning needs for staff. Coordinates orientation and on-going education of staff.
  • Participates in recruitment, hiring, and retention activities for nursing and other clinical roles within the nursing units.
  • Demonstrates effective problem resolution skills and assists staff with same.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage others by communicating effectively, listening objectively, and sharing information, providing direction in a clear manner, monitoring productivity, and following up with individual employees. Works collaboratively with Chief Nursing Officer, physicians, ancillary departments, vendors. Participates in committees and task forces.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer services skills and communicates customer satisfaction status to staff and physicians.
  • Provides direction, suggestions, and education to promote and improve customer service. Follows up on customer service issues as requested.
  • Effectively communicates with staff and is viewed as a role model and leader. Conducts regular staff meetings and maintains minutes of such. Interacts in a professional and caring manner, role modeling a professional presence. Makes self available to staff and routinely makes rounds amongst staff.
  • Participates in organized professional activities.
  • Participates in activities, such as seminars, community events, etc. that promote services provided by the health system in Great Bend.
  • Performs staff evaluations/development and manages employee relations, including disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Ensures staff members are trained in their roles.
  • Ensures timesheets and/or certifications are up to date and entered correctly into the System.
  • Fiscally responsible for areas under their control.

  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree Nursing
  • 3 or more years of experience of active administrative/management experience in the healthcare environment, in addition to three years hospital nursing experience


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master Degree Nursing in Nursing, Hospital Administration, Business Administration or related field within 5 years
  • 5 or more years of nursing-related healthcare experience


Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
