Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
As an integral part of a team, the Assistant Director of Engineering is responsible for continuously looking for ways to improve each guest’s experience from providing exceptional guest service to being responsible for all aspects of the Engineering department to include the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all heating, ventilation, refrigeration, mechanical equipment, and furniture, etc. for the comfort of our guests and employees. Coordinate and monitor the property’s Preventive Maintenance Program to ensure the safety and comfort of staff and guests. Oversees the Engineering Department, including managing and training Engineering staff.
REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manages the physical plant including the majority of equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water, pool, electrical, and life safety systems. Ensures that systems and equipment are operating at optimum safety, effectiveness, and efficiency levels.
- Provide and ensure necessary training to engineers and staff on all engineering operational tasks and activities
- Assist with major projects’ research and planning, prepare analysis or assessment reports, prepare approval requests, and assist with implementation.
- Assist with annual capital and expenses/payroll budgeting process.
- Assist with monthly and annual expenses review and variance control.
- Ensure maintained cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas at all times. Ensure the safety of the work area.
- Ensure consistent and correct maintenance and use of equipment.
- Anticipate guests’ needs, respond and resolve guest concerns/complaints promptly, and acknowledge all guests, however busy and at whatever time of day, to maintain positive guest relations at all times.
- Implement a preventive maintenance program of all-building equipment and guestrooms, including the training of the Engineering staff on the adherence and requirements of the program.
- Purchase necessary parts, supplies, tools, and equipment related to Engineering, through direct contact with sales representatives.
- Ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of all:
- Heaters, pumps, valves, and lines are used in the distribution of steam and heated or processed water.
- Refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, traps, transfer pumps, expansion valves, stop valves as well as all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperatures.
- Air compressors along distribution lines and all valves and devices for air control.
- Natural and manufactured gas and distribution lines, including all valves and control devices.
- Water filters, softeners, piping, and pumps are used in conjunction with water distribution, including all sinks and toilet bowls, as well as supply lines and water lines.
- All types of motors or engines are used to power pumps, compressors, and fans.
- Electrical work and repairs.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Prepare and adjust weekly work schedules in accordance with staffing guidelines and labor forecasts.
- Authorize requests for vacation/sick leave, holidays for staff members, and leaves of absences, schedule changes, overtime, salary increases/reductions, purchase requests, and expenditures.
- Monitor staff performance in all phases of job functions ensuring that all procedures are carried out to departmental standards; rectify any deficiencies with respective personnel.
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and regular feedback to help manage conflict and improve staff members’ performance.
- Completes and conducts performance appraisals with the engineering staff.
- Attend and participate in the hotel’s Safety Committee and ensure appropriate and timely follow-up of items that need to be corrected.
- Perform all other duties as may be required or assigned.
- Work harmoniously and professionally with co-workers and supervisors.
- Actively support the Safety Committee.
- Support the energy conservation program allowing the hotel to meet its annual budget targets.
- Maintain close working relations with hotel contractors who furnish reliable 24-hour emergency service.
- Assist with maintenance of all fire fighting equipment in first-class order and ensure that emergency procedures are understood and practiced by hotel staff.
EDUCATION WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Education High school diploma or equivalent vocational training certificate.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a supervisory role in a facilities engineering environment.
- Any combination of education and experience which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the minimum qualifications to perform the essential functions of this position
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English required
- Requires working technical knowledge of general building maintenance.
- Working knowledge is generally learned on-the-Job or through a series of professional certifications.
- Requires knowledge of the ability to operate computer equipment.
- Requires knowledge of blueprints, wiring diagrams, and hydraulics.
- Working knowledge of all mechanical equipment critical to the operation of the building.
- Ability to troubleshoot and use alternative(s) in emergency situations.
- Ability to instruct/direct staff in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.
- Ensure familiarity with all hotel services/features and local attractions and activities to respond to guest inquiries accurately.
- Ability to anticipate guest needs; respond promptly and acknowledge all guests.
- Demonstrates professional, interpersonal skills with various levels of individuals.
- Ability to maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all departmental policies/service procedures/standards.
- Proficiency in English reading and writing; basic mathematical calculations; working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to multi-task.

- Local mechanical codes

- Blueprints and plumbing and wiring schematics
- Power and hand tools, meters, etc. as it relates to the technical trades
