Job Description

The Assistant Director of Clinical Ethics Consultation (ADCEC) at the Center for Biomedical Ethics (CBME), a collaboration between the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine and the MetroHealth System (MHS), will work closely with the Director, clinical ethicists, and staff of the CBME to help promote quality ethics consults, educational efforts, and community engagement. The mission of the CBME is to provide education, service, and research regarding the ethical dimensions of the delivery and practice of health care in support of the MetroHealth System and the broader health care community. To that end, the ADCEC will serve as the key point person in all CBME related consult activities, educational initiatives and outreach. As a senior staff member of the Department of Bioethics, the ADRP will support its mission of contributing outstanding research and scholarship, providing service to health professionals, policy makers, and the public, and promoting bioethical dialogue through research collaborations, training and educational programs, and institutional partnerships. The ADCEC will be dedicated to clinical ethics consultation, clinical education, community outreach/advocacy, and related scholarship.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position will be based in the CBME at MHS and will be fully funded by MHS. The successful candidate’s efforts will be dedicated to clinical ethics consultation, clinical education, community outreach/advocacy, and related scholarship. There will be some opportunities for participation in the CWRU DoB, which has teaching programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels.

1. Serve as a clinical ethics consultant, assist with consult review and quality control, and help train junior clinical ethicists; Regularly participate in ICU and other rounds/meetings throughout the hospital (75%)

2. Contribute to CBME educational, research, scholarship, and outreach/advocacy programs (10%)

3. Develop and deliver clinical bioethics educational, scholarship, and outreach/advocacy programs (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Attend and participate in relevant CBME and MHS meetings and assist with various administrative tasks (3%)

2. Perform other duties as assigned. (2%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with Department of Bioethics and CBME leadership, administration, faculty, and staff to complete position responsibilities.

University: Monthly/weekly contact with the Office of Sponsored Projects, School of Medicine Office of Grants and Contracts, and department administrators

External: Contact as required with NIH Program Officers and Specialists regarding requirements for and status of grants; Regular contact with personnel at the Department of Bioethics partner institutions (Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center, University Hospitals, and VA Medical Center) and the CWRU schools.

Students: Contact with student employees, undergraduate and graduate students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervisory responsibilities. Will train and provide oversight to research staff and students as needed. This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Performance feedback will be requested as it relates to individuals serving on committees this position directs.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: PhD, MD, or other terminal degree in bioethics, medical humanities, or social sciences, and 5 years of related postdoctoral experience required; or Master’s degree in bioethics, medical humanities, or social sciences and 8 years of direct related experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to MHS and CWRU.

2. Educational and presentational skills; ability to distill and communicate practical clinical ethics concepts and principles in clinical education settings.

3. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines.

4. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.

5. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, and good decision making.

6. Good computer skills, including database management.

7. Ability to communicate in person and remotely.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May require occasional travel, or work during evenings and weekends.

Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a transparent estimate of the salary for this position at the time of its posting. The starting annual salary is $79,000-$80,000, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.
