Job Description

This position reports to the Director of Academic Services. The Assistant Director of Academic Services is responsible for providing academic, vocational and personal support and advising to Student-Athletes in the Athletic Department within the guidelines of the University, Conference and NCAA rules.

The Assistant Director of Academic Services supports the Director in the following:

  • Academic Advising & Course/Program Planning
    Provide academic counseling to student-athletes, including guidance on course selection, major exploration, registration, and alignment of academic schedules with athletic commitments.
  • Eligibility, Compliance & Degree Progress Monitoring - Assist with eligibility and transcript evaluation; monitor progress toward degree completion, adding/dropping courses, and compliance with NCAA/OVC/institutional academic requirements.
  • Academic Performance Tracking & Reporting - Monitor and report student-athlete academic standing, attendance, APR, and other academic performance metrics to coaches and administration.
  • Student-Athlete Academic Support Programming - Develop and implement academic support services including tutoring coordination, study tables, study skills workshops, and Life Skills programming.
  • Early Intervention & Academic Needs Assessment - Conduct semester academic assessments to identify at-risk student-athletes and implement intervention strategies to support academic success.
  • Liaison & Communication with Campus Partners - Serve as primary academic liaison between student-athletes, faculty, Registrar, Compliance, FAR, and coaching staff, including coordination around travel schedules and academic conflicts.
  • Records Management & Privacy Compliance Maintain - student-athlete academic records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and institutional confidentiality standards.
  • Holistic Student-Athlete Development & Accountability - Promote academic success, personal development, and accountability by collaborating with campus and athletic support units to support student-athlete wellbeing.
  • Hire, supervise, and develop student assistants and tutors while ensuring compliance with NCAA and institutional policies.
  • Institutional Reporting & Special Projects - Assist with reporting responsibilities such as Graduation Success Rates (GSR) and other departmental or NCAA-required reporting.
  • Contributes to the success of EIU by performing other duties and assisting with projects, as assigned.

Compensation

Final offer will be commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The position is budgeted for a range of $180,000 to $190,000 per year.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Experience working with student-athletes in an intercollegiate athletics environment preferred, including areas such as academic support, student development, compliance, athletics administration, or related student support services. Ability to promote academic and personal development of student-athletes, organization, communication, and collaboration within a team setting. Familiarity with NCAA rules and regulations, academic support systems, and/or NCAA academic reform initiatives is preferred. Familiarity with computer software including Team Works, Grades First, word processing, spreadsheets, and database management systems.
