Job Description

The Career Development office is a division of the College of Arts & Sciences Student Services & Admissions Office and a member of the Cornell Career Network. The College of Arts & Sciences has 4,500+ undergraduate students, representing different backgrounds and cultures from across the U.S. and the world. Career Development serves all undergraduate students, as well as recent graduates up to 5 years after graduation, on all career related topics including internship/job search strategies, graduate and professional school admission, major and career exploration, interviewing, and job offer negotiation. Our very busy office serves over 2,500 unique students each year through individual appointments, workshops, and events.

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director will be student career counseling and coaching. Advise students on career development and job search issues including, but not limited to: major/career exploration, career planning, job/internship search strategies, resume/cover letter review, interview skills and feedback, job offer evaluation, salary negotiation, and resource referrals. Support students in developing goals and priorities and provide relevant resources to secure their career pursuits. Advise students on graduate school, including, but not limited to: determining if/when to attend graduate school, identifying schools, reviewing application materials, and evaluating admissions offers. Conduct behavioral and case practice interviews with students and provide positive and constructive feedback. Administer and interpret career-related testing and assessments, including the Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, CliftonStrengths, and other career assessments.

Serve as the Health Careers liaison for the College of Arts & Sciences. Advise students on topics including but not limited to: gaining exposure to/experience in the medical profession (research, volunteer, diversity programs/opportunities, shadowing), major selection, and career decision-making. Strategize with students on finding internship and bridge/gap year (note: candidate for this position will not advise students applying to medical school). Represent Arts & Sciences at campus-wide Health Careers Advising Network (HCAN) and actively participate in discussions. Collaborate with the Health Professions Advising Center, which advises students through the application cycle.

Manage the Pathways Internship Program, a career exploration and development program that empowers first-generation college students. Implement the Pathways Internship Program (PIP), including: developing the application materials, evaluating and selecting participants, creating and assessing learning outcomes, advising a cohort of students in identifying a career enriching summer experience, and awarding funding. Collaborate with the Career Development Associate and Program Coordinator to ensure program runs smoothly.

Educate students on career development issues using various media including workshops, lectures, seminars, print materials, web pages, and other technology. Develop, update, and present workshops that meet student needs for career development and planning. Evening or weekend hours may be required in order to facilitate programs and workshops. Create and manage the content presented to students during the First Year Advising Seminar, in collaboration with the two Career Development Associates. Assist with the creation and maintenance of the Career Development Toolkit, on-demand career content offered via Canvas. Research trends in hiring and interviewing, and assist in creating/maintaining resources as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of experience working in higher education or equivalent combination.
  • Must be student-centered, with strong advising skills and the desire to work with college students.
  • Professional, diplomatic demeanor required to interact with current/prospective students, parents, alumni, employers, staff, faculty, and other constituents with diplomacy and tact.
  • Commitment to/understanding of the liberal arts and sciences mission, and how to assist students in utilizing their education/skills in obtaining their career goals.
  • Knowledge of career/student development theories, and the ability to apply them while interacting with students is necessary.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal & written) and presentation skills are required.
  • Excel and actively contribute as a team with other dedicated professionals working across a College-based career office, the Cornell Career Network, colleagues in the College of Arts & Sciences Student Services and Admissions Office, and the Health Professions Advising Center.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, career development, or a related field.
  • Experience in advising students interested in careers in the health professions.
  • Certified in MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, and CliftonStrengths.
  • Knowledge of and ability to integrate NACE Career Readiness competencies into advising and programming.
  • Ability to understand the needs of high achieving Ivy League students, and advise students regarding stress management.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work in a highly collaborative career services model.
  • Familiarity with online recruiting programs, such as Handshake, and career tools, a plus.
  • Knowledge of health careers preparation, and experiential learning and job opportunities in the health careers.
