Job Description

The Assistant Dean for PhD Programs in the School of Medicine (SOM) will provide innovative and dynamic leadership for the school’s PhD programs and related activities. The Assistant

Dean reports directly to the Vice Dean (VD) for Graduate Education to fulfil the vision and strategic management for SOM PhD programs. The Assistant Dean will work together with the VD, the Graduate Education Office (GEO) Director of Finance and Operations, GEO staff, Director of Career and Professional Development, the PhD program directors, department chairs, and the BSTP and MSTP Directors to ensure that best practices in PhD training are upheld by all programs, and help develop new initiatives that add value for current and future SOM PhD programming and help ensure the success of our students. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will work closely with the Enrollment Management Office and University Marketing and Communications to help recruit highly qualified students nationally to SOM programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Program Management

● Meet monthly with PhD program directors to create a dialogue about their programmatic needs, identify strategic initiatives, and maintain bi-directional communication regarding policies and procedures affecting PhD students.

● Guide and assist PhD program directors in managing and resolving administrative hurdles and student-related issues. Manage mentor/student separations.

● With the Office of Finance, develop and enforce policies to ensure prospective PhD mentors from all programs meet specified requirements.

● Develop and implement consistency in mentor/student compacts and financial agreements across all PhD Programs.

● Work with the VD, Vice Provost, Dean of Graduate Studies, and GEO staff to develop a robust mentor training program for PhD mentors, and track compliance.

● Oversee the development of annual calendar and assist VD and administration with program reviews for State approvals and accreditations.

● Work with the Medical Education and Research Evaluation (MERE) team and program directors to develop surveys that help capture and report data about alumni outcomes and satisfaction with their education. Analyze survey and outcomes data to develop continuous quality improvement of educational and value-added programming.

● Work closely with the Director of finance and Operations to ensure uniformity and consistency in operations and finance verifications during student placement across all programs

2. Program Development

● Working with the VD, facilitate the development of new PhD programs to fulfill unmet national needs for our students and help guide these new initiatives through institutional and State of Ohio approval processes.

● Collaborate with the Director of Career and Professional Development to create and manage activities that add-value to SOM PhD program curricula.

3. Recruiting, Admissions, and Student Success

● Work with the Enrollment Management Office, PhD program directors, and University and SOM Marketing and communications to develop and implement strategies to enhance the national recruitment of high caliber prospective students for all PhD Programs. Engage students, alumni, faculty, and staff in recruitment activities.

● Working with the VD and the Assistant Dean for Master’s Programs, develop and serve on the Committee on Students to manage incoming reports from the AccountabilityManagement System (AMS).

The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $15,000- $25,000. This is a part time position and will cover 10% of institutional salary and an additional $7500 annual salary.
