
The Assistant Dean for Master’s Programs in the School of Medicine (SOM) will provide
innovative and dynamic leadership for the school’s 18 Graduate Education master’s programs
and current and future certificate programs. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Vice
Dean (VD) for Graduate Education to fulfil the vision and strategic management for SOM
master’s and certificate programs and related activities. The Assistant Dean will work together
with the VD, the Graduate Education Office (GEO) Director of Finance and Operations, GEO
staff, Director of Career and Professional Development, master’s program directors, and
department chairs to ensure that best practices in master’s training are upheld by all programs,
to develop and create new initiatives that add value for current and future SOM master’s and
certificate programming, and to help ensure the success of our students
Major activities include collaborating with other SOM and University offices to help improve the
recruitment, advising, admissions, matriculation, student success, academic planning, program
reviews and assessments, and advancing the overall quality of our existing master’s and
certificate programs. The AD will help evaluate the SOM’s portfolio of master’s and certificate
programming and strategically direct improvements to existing programs and the development
of new programming.
Additionally, the Assistant Dean will work closely with the Enrollment Management Office and
University Marketing and Communications to help recruit highly qualified students nationally to
SOM programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Program Management
● Work with department chairs, master’s program directors, and faculty to strategically
plan innovative, novel initiatives to strengthen current master’s and certificate programs.
This includes the strategic evaluation and continual improvement of each program to
ensure alignment with institutional goals, workforce needs, and national trends.
● Review and update GEO academic policies and procedures affecting master’s students,
with engagement from the VD and the School of Graduate Studies.
● Meet monthly with master’s program directors to create a dialogue about their
programmatic needs, identify strategic initiatives, and maintain bi-directional
communication regarding policies and procedures affecting master’s students.
● Guide and assist master’s program directors and the School of Graduate Studies in
managing and resolving administrative hurdles and student-related issues.
● Assist the VD and GEO staff in performing program reviews for state approvals and
accreditations.
● Work closely with GEO Director of Operations and Finance to ensure uniformity and
consistency in operations and finance across all programs.
2. Program Development
● Facilitate the development of new master’s and certificate programs to fulfill unmet
regional and national needs for our students and help guide these new initiatives through
institutional and State of Ohio approval processes. This responsibility involves working
with potential program directors in the strategic creation and direction of new potential
programs from conception to implementation, including market analysis, feasibility
studies, and implementation of the new program, if warranted.
● Collaborate with the Director of Career and Professional Development to create and
manage activities that add-value to master’s and certificate program curricula.
● Develop opportunities for cross-programmatic engagement and community building
activities for master’s students.
● Identify and develop individualized opportunities for students with interests in inter-
school and intra-school collaborations that fulfil each student’s educational needs.
● Develop the PRIME + program/track and additional co-curricular activities that aim to
enhance postbaccalaureate and master’s students’ experiences as they prepare to apply
to medical school or other professional programs.
3. Recruiting, Admissions, and Student Success
● Work with the Enrollment Management Office and master’s program directors to develop
and implement strategies to enhance national recruitment and matriculation of high
caliber prospective students for all master’s and certificate programs. Engage students,
alumni, faculty, and staff in recruitment activities.
● Represent SOM programs at recruiting events locally and nationally, such as Graduate
School fairs and with pre-health advisors. Engage students, alumni, faculty, and staff in
recruitment activities.
● Serve as a concierge to help guide prospective students to the appropriate SOM
programs that help them achieve their educational goals.
● Work with the program directors and the GEO student success specialist to help identify,
support, and manage struggling and problematic students
● Working with the VD and the Assistant Dean for PhD Programs, develop and serve on a
Committee on Students to manage incoming reports from the Accountability
Management System (AMS).
4. Program Support and Data Management
● Work with the Enrollment Management Office and the Office of Finance and Planning to
establish and communicate annual enrollment goals and tuition revenue targets to
programs. Proactively track progress with the Enrollment Management Office throughout
the recruitment cycle and regularly report forecasted results to each program and the office of Finance and Planning.
● Ensure that program director is capturing and reporting data in a comparable manner
between programs regarding applications, matriculation, metrics of progression through
the degree-granting programs.
● Work with the Medical Education and Research Evaluation (MERE) team and program
directors to develop surveys that help capture and report data about alumni outcomes
and satisfaction with their education.
● Analyze survey and outcomes data to develop continuous quality improvement of
educational and value-added programming, ensuring that each program’s efficacy and
strategic direction are aligned with institutional and student success metrics.
The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $36,000 - $60,000. This is a
part ime position with 30% salary coverage and and additional $7,500 annually. CWRU

Experience: A record of successfully building or expanding graduate education programs, with
preference for those engaged with Master’s programming. Applicants must currently hold a
faculty appointment in the SOM and should possess a record of outstanding administrative
leadership and managerial experience. A demonstrated history of successful mentorship (at
various educational levels) and collegiality and collaboration with faculty, students, staff and
administrators. A record of successful fiscal management.
Education/Licensing: MD, PhD, or EdD required.
