Job Description

Jamestown Public School District has an opening for an Assistant Custodian at Jamestown High School.
The Assistant Custodian is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors, performing a variety cleaning and maintenance duties, and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and events. Other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time position working the day shift, 12 months a year.
Starting wage for this position is $17.69/hr. to $18.28/hr., DOE.

The Assistant Custodian is responsible for supporting daily custodial operations to ensure a clean, safe, secure, and well-maintained school environment. This position performs routine cleaning, assists with building upkeep, responds to maintenance needs, supports school events, and ensures positive interactions with staff, students, and community members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning practices and facility care.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with administrators, custodians, and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Custodial & Cleaning Duties

  • Clean and maintain all assigned areas of the school, ensuring interior and exterior spaces remain free of debris.
  • Vacuum, shampoo, sweep, mop, wax, polish, and scrub floors as needed; ensure proper care of carpet, tile, and wood surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and shower rooms; restock supplies and maintain dispensing units.
  • Clean windows, walls, sinks, desks, water fountains, handrails, blinds, and similar surfaces.
  • Clean chalkboards, marker boards, and trays daily.
  • Pick up litter inside and outside the building; empty and clean trash receptacles.
  • Keep custodial closets and storage areas organized and uncluttered.

Building Support & General Duties

  • Assist with moving and arranging furniture and equipment for special events.
  • Check for roof leaks after heavy rains by looking for stained ceiling tiles or water streaks.
  • Raise and lower flags at scheduled times.
  • Help maintain building security, properly opening or closing the building and coordinating with other custodians.

Safety, Supervision & Communication

  • Report vandalism, unruly student behavior, loitering, or similar concerns to the building administrator.
  • Demonstrate friendly, courteous, and helpful communication with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Exercise good judgment when assisting staff, students, and community members.
  • Demonstrate cost-conscious use of supplies and awareness of maintenance department expenditures.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ensure building security by properly opening and closing facilities and coordinating with custodians.
  • Raise and lower flags as required.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Building Administrator or Director of Maintenance.
