The Assistant Controller is a strategic financial leader and business partner responsible for supporting financial performance and accounting operations across the organization. This position leads a team of Staff and Senior Accountants in delivering actionable financial information, improving core accounting processes, and translating complex financial data into strategic recommendations that enable enterprise-wide decision-making. The Assistant Controller supports the unique financial dynamics of healthcare staffing, while identifying opportunities for process improvement and automation. This role partners closely with operational and production leadership to ensure financial insights directly support business strategy and drive measurable results.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Financial Stewardship & Business Intelligence – 60%

  • Delivers comprehensive, timely financial analysis and strategic insights that drive informed business decisions and support reporting to senior leadership
  • Owns month-end and year-end close processes; drives continuous improvement initiatives to accelerate close cycles, enhance data quality, and ensure real-time financial visibility
  • Leverages advanced analytics and data-driven methodologies to identify process inefficiencies, cost optimization opportunities, and revenue enhancement initiatives specific to healthcare staffing economics
  • Performs rigorous variance analysis and develops nuanced explanations of financial drivers; provides proactive recommendations to address unfavorable trends and capitalize on emerging opportunities
  • Makes recommendations to resolve variances, errors, or omissions
  • Ensures accuracy and completeness of complex accounting transactions; maintains rigorous controls over consolidations, intercompany transactions, and sensitive accounting determinations
  • Partners with external auditors and internal stakeholders to ensure timely, efficient audit processes; demonstrates mastery of healthcare-specific compliance requirements and maintains robust internal controls
  • Manages compliance with complex regulatory requirements specific to healthcare staffing, including licensing, tax filings, and industry-specific reporting obligations

Strategic Talent Leadership & Organizational Excellence – 20%

  • Optimizes team capacity and workload distribution; implements systems and processes that enhance productivity and enable continuous capability development
  • Cultivates a high-performance culture characterized by accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence; establishes and monitors key performance indicators aligned with organizational strategy
  • Owns accounting processes end-to-end; drives standardization, automation, and continuous improvement to reduce risk, enhance efficiency, and maintain compliance with best practices
  • Develops and executes comprehensive talent development strategies; invests in team capabilities through mentoring, technical training, and career path planning
  • Leads recruitment and talent assessment initiatives; identifies and attracts top finance talent aligned with organizational culture and strategic capabilities
  • Provides ongoing performance coaching and development; conducts rigorous talent assessments and designs growth plans that accelerate high-performer advancement and address performance gaps
  • Creates and delivers associate corrective actions and performance improvement plans as needed
  • Keeps senior management informed of accomplishments and/or opportunities for improvement

Operating Expense Leadership & Strategic Financial Planning – 20%

  • Leads comprehensive operating expense forecasting and modeling; partners with FP&A team (which owns gross profit forecasting) to ensure integrated financial planning; develops scenario analysis for OpEx drivers including labor, systems, overhead, and support functions
  • Serves as strategic business partner to operations and clinical leadership on OpEx optimization; identifies process improvements, automation opportunities, and cost management strategies that enhance operating margin without compromising service quality
  • Develops and maintains OpEx forecasting models and planning infrastructure; collaborates with FP&A team to integrate operating expense data into enterprise financial planning; ensures accuracy, consistency, and real-time visibility of OpEx data
  • Owns operating expense budget development and management; coordinates with FP&A team and operational leaders to establish OpEx targets that support growth objectives while maintaining financial discipline; manages budget variances and provides strategic guidance on discretionary vs. fixed cost optimization

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS (IF APPLICABLE)

  • Manages company payroll bank account reconciliations and cash forecasts
  • May work on special projects or other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY/BUDGETARY/EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITY

  • Directly manages and mentors a team of 4-5 accounting professionals; holds full P&L accountability for team productivity, quality, and capability development
  • Represents accounting function in executive-level discussions with external stakeholders including auditors, regulatory agencies, and service providers; maintains professional relationships that enhance organization's credibility and efficiency

QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience in general ledger, financial reporting, or financial planning roles, with demonstrated track record in complex financial environments; 3+ years in a supervisory or team leadership capacity
  • Healthcare services or staffing industry experience strongly preferred; familiarity with healthcare compliance, revenue cycle, and staffing economics a plus
