About this job

The Assistant Vice President, Accounting (Assistant Controller) position is responsible for overseeing the Company’s financial close process and the Company’s controls over financial reporting, including the company’s accounting policies, SEC reporting and GAAP compliance. The Assistant Controller is responsible for leading, recruiting, supervising, developing and mentoring the Corporate Accounting, Financial Reporting, Accounting Policy and Financial Controls & Compliance teams. The Assistant Controller will be an essential business partner and leader across the CarMax organization, provide accounting expertise to the organization and provide advisory services to senior management of the Company. This role will report to the Chief Accounting Officer & Controller.

What you will do

  • Ensure the accuracy, compliance and timeliness of the company’s external reporting activity in compliance with GAAP and SEC regulations. This includes quarterly, annual and any other required SEC filings.
  • Deliver accounting and SEC reporting expertise to the organization, including executive leadership. Ensure accounting policies are established, executed, documented and disclosed with the objective of minimizing financial reporting risk. This includes the adoption of new rules and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls over financial reporting / Sarbanes-Oxley 404.
  • Direct and manage day to day accounting operations to ensure integrity and accuracy of financial statements. Ensure the Corporate Accounting team delivers timely monthly closes as well as critical data and analysis for budgeting, forecasting and reporting to senior management.
  • Identify and implement accounting process improvements, including streamlining of processes and automation to improve the efficiency of close and reporting cycles.
  • Serve as key stakeholder and participant in the enhancements to financial ERP system, automation solutions and other strategic technology project
  • Serve as a key business partner to Financial Planning and Analysis, Investor Relations, CAF (CarMax Auto Finance) Accounting, Legal and Treasury, and Strategic Sourcing.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the company’s external auditors. This includes providing information for their annual audit and determining appropriate treatment for the company’s complex and/or unique transactions.
  • Present information/analysis to the Board of Directors, as needed.
  • Serve as a key partner in developing and maintaining the strategic vision for the Accounting Department collaboratively with other senior leaders of the department.
  • Lead and develop a team of associates through timely performance feedback delivered during day-to-day observations, periodic file reviews and annual performance reviews.
  • Responsible for creating individual development plans and business objectives designed to enhance and assist associate growth.
  • Responsible for attracting and retaining talented associates and creating effective succession plans in collaboration with other senior Accounting leaders.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration, or equivalent business experience
  • Fifteen plus years of progressively responsible accounting experience including experience in both public accounting (Big 4 preferable) audits of public companies and corporate accounting management for a public company in a role leading external reporting processes, accounting policy, general ledger and other key accounting functions)
  • Strong technical accounting skills, including knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and SEC reporting requirements
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, influence and persuade across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to build and maintain strong partnerships throughout the organization and stay connected with all areas of the business
  • Ability to dig deep into detail while retaining a broad view perspective
  • Ability to manage and communicate timelines and expectations with associates and business partners
  • Ability to develop, execute and adjust a plan to achieve long-term and short-term results
  • Adept at managing multiple priorities and business partners
  • Ability to proactively understand latest industry trends and regulations and their potential impact for CarMax
  • Collaborative approach based on the ability to listen and value others’ opinions
  • Ability to embrace and champion a diversity of ideas
  • Ability to develop associates through constructive feedback and encouragement
  • Ability to effectively and persuasively present controversial or complex topics to senior management, public groups and/or board of directors

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.
