About the role
In this role, you will assist in the delivery of professional building services that support community safety and regulatory compliance. You will primarily undertake compliance audits and enforcement activities in line with the Building Act 1993, while also contributing to permit assessment and approvals, and statutory registration and compliance functions within the business unit, as required.

Work Type: Permanent Full-time
Classification: Band 5, at $81,005 plus superannuation

Key responsibilities include:

  • Protect the amenity and safety of the community through enforcement measures to assist customers, ensuring equitable and proper compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
  • Provide quality information or advice to leaders, and others across the organization.
  • Support innovation and best practice approach in the department for customer and community satisfaction.
  • Drawing on prior knowledge and experience provide customers and the public with a professional and up to date advisory service.
  • Develop the necessary permits, notice procedures and / or legal action to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures of Council.
  • Assess applications for permits and consents ensuring that they meet the legislative building requirements, assisting customers throughout the process to be able to deliver an efficient outcome.
  • Assist in the delivery of a range of day-to-day activities as they relate to Permit Assessment & Approvals, Statutory Registration & Compliance, and Support Services & Customer Contact, ensuring delivery is within agreed timelines.
  • This role will be required to participate in after hours on-call / availability service and rostered overtime activities.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have the relevant formal academic qualifications recognised by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) in respect to building surveying.

Essential Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in building surveying, working in either a local government Building Department or private practice.
  • Demonstrated skills in building surveying including assessment of permits and consents, implementation of investigations and enforcement matters, and other relevant Statutory requirements of Councils
  • People skills to support, negotiate, influence, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Well-developed communication- written and verbal skills.
  • Proficient in problem solving.
  • Some stakeholder management skills or ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve task outcomes.
  • Ability to work to plan and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as required by the task.
  • Ability to deliver quality outcomes for customers or experience providing customer service.
  • A proficient knowledge and ability to interpret building and associated legislation, regulations and practices.
  • A Current Victorian Driver's licence.

Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check and a Working with Children's Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
