Key Responsibilities

The Office of the Utah Attorney General is seeking an Assistant Attorney General for the Financial Intelligence Center Section within the Financial Crimes Division. The Financial Crimes Intelligence Center (FCIC) serves as a centralized reporting hub for banking and financial institutions, as well as the public, staffed by a team of financial crime investigators and prosecutors. The FCIC’s centralized approach helps identify and address patterns of criminal activity across multiple financial institutions, contributing to enhanced public safety. The attorney will collaborate closely with other attorneys, criminal investigators, analysts, and forensic accountants.

This position focuses on handling assigned cases, conducting legal research and writing, and presenting the State’s case at all stages of the criminal process, including jury trials. The attorney will provide legal counsel to law enforcement, offer recommendations, and facilitate decisions related to criminal matters. The role requires strong written and oral advocacy skills, the ability to work effectively in a professional team environment with other attorneys, support staff, and investigative agencies, and the capacity to manage an existing caseload immediately.

Responsibilities:

  • Screens matters for criminal charges and prosecutes matters as assigned;
  • Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and facilitates decisions;
  • Provides legal counsel and advises law enforcement as needed;
  • Conducts legal research and writing, and presents the State’s case at every stage of the criminal process, including trying matters before juries;

Qualifications

Five years of experience in criminal practice preferred. Prosecution experience preferred. Significant courtroom experience in trying felony cases preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to handle complex financial fraud prosecutions.

Applicants must possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills, the ability to work in a professional team environment with other attorneys, support staff, and investigative agencies, and have the experience and ability to immediately take over an existing caseload. Membership in the Utah State Bar in good standing is required. The position is located in Salt Lake City. Travel is required as incumbents will need to engage in criminal litigation and other legal proceedings throughout the State.
