Union:

Responsible for the administration and oversite of American University Sports Medicine Program. Establishes and supports the delivery of independent medical care to intercollegiate athletes and the medical autonomy of the Sports Medicine Staff. Monitor the athletics department health and safety policies and practices to ensure compliance with NCAA legislation and establish consistency with intersection best practice guidance. The Assistant Athletic Director/Sports Medicine is responsible for the overall well-being and physical readiness of over 290 student-athletes including injury prevention, care, evaluation, and rehabilitation. This position acts as the Athletics Healthcare Administrator as defined by the NCAA and works under minimal supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages the sports medicine program for the American University Athletics Department. Controls administration of training room facilities to ensure that the facilities run smoothly; maintains accurate injury and treatment records; budgets accounts; maintain inventory; purchases supplies; and develops educational programs for athletes. This position communicates with team physicians, administrators, and coaching staff regarding the health and treatment of student-athletes. Coordinates university’s drug-testing program for student-athletes in collaboration with the Deputy Athletic Director.

  • Provides athletic medicine services to student-athletes in compliance with the scope of a Certified Athletic Trainer as dictated by the BOC and a Licensed Athletic Trainer as dictated by the DC Board of Medicine. This includes but is not limited to: initial evaluation, coordination and administration of treatment and rehabilitation plans, administration of therapeutic modalities, immediate and emergency care, standardized testing for head-related injuries, and providing education, guidance, and counseling regarding athletic training and the prevention, care, and treatment of athletic injuries under the general supervision of a Team Physician.

  • Attend practices and contests, both home and away for assigned team/s. Assures the readiness of athletes to participate in sport and safety of the playing area. Provide initial evaluation of injuries and provides immediate care to injured athletes to determine extent of injury and need for further follow-up medical care.

  • Hires, onboards, trains, and manages athletic trainers and all sports medicine staff: This includes providing ongoing coaching and feedback, managing performance, and identifying opportunities for professional development. Serves as affiliate sports medicine faculty for the Military Sports Medicine Fellowship.

  • Maintains athletic training knowledge through regular attendance at conferences and symposiums, reading scholarly articles and journals relevant to the field of athletic training and through continuing research in field of athletic training, obtaining at minimum 50 CEUs per two-year cycle as dictated by the BOC.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Reporting directly to this position are the 6 full-time athletic trainers and work study students.

  • Oversees department budget.

  • This position reports directly to the Deputy Athletic Director.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-time.

  • 35 hours per week.

  • This position requires a considerable time above regular daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly University work schedule requirements.

Salary Range:

  • $95,000.00 - $100,000.00 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree or equivalent.

  • 5 - 8 years of relevant experience.

Travel Required:

  • Frequent travel is required.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in athletic training or related field.

  • Degree from a CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Program.

  • BOC certification.

  • Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) certification at the Basic Life Support/Professional Rescuer level or above.

  • District of Columbia Athletic Trainer Licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure.

  • NPI Number.

  • Experience working in college athletics and at the NCAA Division-I level is preferred.

  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per District of Columbia licensure guidelines.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
