The opportunity

Downer’s Utilities – Water business is seeking a motivated Assistant Accountant to support the financial administration and reporting functions across a portfolio of major infrastructure projects.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, payroll, project costing, purchasing, and financial reporting activities.

Working closely with Project Accountants, Project Controls teams, and operational stakeholders, you'll help maintain strong financial controls while supporting the successful delivery of essential water infrastructure projects.

What you'll do

  • Process accounts payable, payroll costing, purchase orders, receipting, and subcontractor claims.
  • Assist with month-end activities, including accruals, reporting, and cost corrections.
  • Raise client invoices and maintain vendor accounts and approval workflows.
  • Prepare financial, payroll, cost, and purchase order reports for project teams and management.
  • Support compliance with Downer and client financial controls while contributing to continuous business improvement.

What we're looking for

  • Experience in accounts payable, payroll administration, finance administration, or project accounting support.
  • Knowledge of financial systems such as JD Edwards, InEight, Teambinder, or similar platforms.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative, team-focused approach.
