Job Description

daa Asset Management forms part of the wider Infrastructure function at Dublin Airport. The purpose of this department and team is to operate & maintain the assets of Dublin Airport. Applications are now open for Apprenticeships to support a modernised approach to the technical asset management of facilities and systems in line with the vision of “keeping people moving through engineering excellence.
We have apprenticeship opportunities for one Painter, one Carpenter and one Gardening (Horticultural) Apprentice. This is an opportunity to commence a career in a field dedicated to learning the practical and academic aspects of a trade craft.

The successful candidates will be trained in all aspects of the trade and applicants must be eligible to undertake the SOLAS Standard Based Apprenticeship Programme. See www.solas.ie.

Solas and the Department of Education & Skills have responsibility for providing off-the-job training, while the apprentices’ on-the-job training will take place on site at Dublin Airport. The duration of an apprenticeship is a minimum of 2 years for the Gardening one and 4 years for the Painter and Carpenter one. The apprentice will receive a QQI Award Level 6 Advanced Craft Certificate on completion of their apprenticeship. This qualification is recognised both nationally and internationally.

Painting Apprenticeship Responsibilities ( 4 year Apprenticeship)

• Surface Preparation -Sanding, filling, masking, and priming walls and woodwork.
• Wallcoverings-Measuring, cutting, and hanging standard and specialty vinyl wall coverings.
• Recoating surfaces- Learning to professionally apply paint, stains, and varnishes using brushes, rollers, and airless spray systems.
• Sign work- Effectively laying out and painting signs
• Paint spraying- Application to a variation of surfaces
• Equipment maintenance - maintain all brushes and rollers in good condition
• Adherence to local Health and Safety protocol
• Good attention to detail and record keeping

Carpentry Apprenticeship Responsibilities ( 4 year Apprenticeship)
• Timber Preparation & Fabrication -Accurately measure, mark, cut, assemble, and finish timber and associated materials in line with technical specifications and industry standards.
• Joinery Installation & Fit-Out Works - Support the installation and fitting of doors, frames, flooring systems, ceiling structures, wall cladding, and bespoke joinery within a live airport environment.
• Planned & Reactive Maintenance - Assist in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of structural and non-structural carpentry elements to ensure the safe and efficient operation of airport facilities.
• Tools & Equipment Operation - Develop proficiency in the safe use, care, and maintenance of hand tools, portable power tools, and fixed woodworking machinery in accordance with best practice.
• Technical Drawings & Specifications - Interpret work instructions, drawings, and specifications to deliver tasks accurately and to expected quality standards.
• Finishing & Quality Assurance - Prepare surfaces and complete finishing tasks (e.g. sanding, sealing) to a high standard, ensuring all work meets daa quality expectations.
• Materials Management - Handle, store, and use materials efficiently, minimising waste and supporting sustainable work practices.
• Health, Safety & Security Compliance -Strictly adhere to all daa health & safety regulations, SOLAS standards, and airport security procedures at all times.

Gardening ( Horticulture) Apprenticeship Responsibilities ( 2 year Apprenticeship)
• Grass Cutting
• Raking and Sowing lawns
• Designing and planting bedding schemes
• Seed sowing and potting of bedding plants
• Management of indoor and outdoor planting arrangements
• Plant propagation in nursery environment
• Hedge planting and hedge cutting
• Weed management- weeding, strimming, cutting
• Operating machinery – Lawn mowers, tractors, watering equipment.
• Adherence to local Health and Safety protocol
• Good attention to detail and record keeping.

For commencement in the role, applicants must hold the following minimum educational qualifications:
Leaving certificate with the following results achieved or expected (if currently sitting):
Minimum Grade O6 in five subjects, including Maths and English and one of the following subjects: Science, Technical Graphics, Materials Technology (Metal/ Wood) OR Technology.
A review of Junior certificate results will also form a significant factor in the selection process.

• Good manual dexterity and coordination, with a willingness to learn practical techniques
• An ability to approach tasks thoughtfully, with attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset
• A good standard of spoken and written English
• A positive attitude towards learning, including the ability to listen, follow instructions, and ask questions when needed
• Ability to work both as part of a team and on own initiative, with appropriate supervision
• A proactive approach and willingness to take responsibility for personal development
• A commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and contributing positively to a culture of continuous improvement
