The City of Jersey City is looking for a qualified, dynamic, and experienced Assessing Aide for the Office of the Tax Assessor. This ideal candidate will perform a variety of duties related to assessing and appraising property for taxation purposes. This person will also collect extensive data, such as taking physical measurements of all the buildings on the property, interviewing owners to gather information, creating reports, and performing routine clerical work.

Examples of duties

Job Duties:

  • Fieldwork, which includes conducting physical inspections of buildings and property valuations.
  • Interview owners to gather property information, such as the date of construction, the type of construction work, and existing permits.
  • Creates reports of each property visit; thus, Assessors may evaluate the property.
  • Records permits for the renovations and construction of buildings.
  • Researches information related to the property for any subject to inspections.
  • Assists in the preparation and completion of tax assessor forms.
  • Prepares and maintains property records for each parcel of property in the tax district.
  • Receives, screens, reviews, and verifies documents.
  • Performs other tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Required Experience: One (1) year of experience in field investigation, including gathering significant data and compiling data into meaningful reports.

Required License: Must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.

Supplemental information

This is a Civil Service Job, and you must eventually pass and qualify for the applicable Civil Service title.
