Under general supervision of Public Works Superintendent, performs a variety of road maintenance, repairs, and construction duties.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of asphalt road maintenance including pothole patching, asphalt repairs, debris removal, and traffic signs.
  • Operates light construction equipment, including pick-up trucks, shoveling (dirt, asphalt or stone) and sweeping associated with asphalt road construction
  • Assist in operations of various equipment, i.e. milling machine, paver and roller.
  • Performs routine daily maintenance including pre/post trip inspections, checking and filling fluids, report repairs, and cleaning all offices, work area, equipment, and facilities
  • Performs construction duties including setting up traffic control, flagging/directing traffic, and utilizing hand tools
  • Handles road materials including hot asphalt, oils, gravel, limestone, concrete, compounds, and crack sealer material
  • Perform any additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned by management or as necessitated by the evolving needs of the organization.

Examples of duties

Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution

Licensure:

  • Valid Class “C” Texas driver's license required

  • Experience with asphalt paving preferred

Supplemental information

Hours:

  • A regular full-time position, requiring the employee to work 40 hours per week.
  • This may include weekends and holidays.

Work Environment:

  • Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials.
  • Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).

Physical Demands:

  • Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching and bending.
  • Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance; need the ability to occasionally kneel and crawl; need the ability to grasp manual controls and the ability to use foot controls and operate gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.

  • Reports To Position: Public Works Superintendent

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
